Copperhead - Retaliation

Mod review

I liked the idea of a sci-fi theme and using guns in a Dungeon Siege engine, plus you are alone and have to constantly dodge bullets, so it's definitely something different from the original game and most of the other mods.

The music is great, there are many different types of weapons to find, many variations of enemies and there are 4 boss battles. My main problem is that the gameplay and environment are simply too repetitive.

Project Lumoria

Mod review

It took me around 3 hours to finish the campaign. The levels are a lot more varied than most of the original ones and the fights are bigger, especially the one near the end where there were like 50 marines and enemies fighting at once with tanks, ghosts, etc. over a large area.

Pros:
+ great level design, they are very varied and NOT repetitive like in the original game
+ big fights with lots of enemies and marines, many of them much bigger than anything found in the original game
+ new enemies and vehicles

Cons:
- voice acting could have been better
- unnecessary drama at the end of the game

Area 51

Game review

This is what I like to call a 7/10 game; there is nothing special about it that would rise it above other shooters, but it is still fun and worth to play.

As you would guess, the game is set in a secret military base where things went seriously wrong. There are a ton of secrets and conspiracies to discover if you ever get tired of killing mutants, cloned soldiers and aliens. There is some really fun stuff to discover, but I don't want to spoil.

You start with a squad that help you out, but after 1/3 of the game you are left alone and the game becomes more engaging and difficult, and levels more interesting, though you will be fighting basically the same enemies until the end. The game is overall very easy even on hard, probably because it was designed for consoles. It also shows in the graphics, since the game looks like it was from 2002/2003 and not 2005. One thing that was surprisingly well made for that time are the ragdoll physics. Some older games also used it, but here it was implemented really well and it made the weapons more fun to use.

One major design flaw for me was that in the first half of the game there were many unnecessary cutscenes that you can't skip, that simply break the gameplay and immersion. Later on those were much rarer and the gameplay was more fluid.

If they spent more time to polish the story, added more enemies and weapons, instead of wasting money on famous voice actors(David Duchovny and Marilyn Manson) that did a terrible job, it could have been not just an OK shooter, but a great one.

Crysis Revival V3.99 + C MOD

Mod review

This could have been an amazing mod, I had fun playing it, but there are some issues with it which may not even be the fault of the modders, but the limitations of the engine.

Pros:
- Insanely detailed maps, the jungle looks much, much better than in the original Crysis.
- Added animals - fish, sharks, crabs, turtles, frogs, insects... the islands really feel alive.
- Being hunted by the cloaking aliens in thick jungle where it is hard to see them is super tense, like playing a Predator game (until the AI messes up).
- Destructible environments.

Cons:
- Terrible AI. Even in original Crysis 2 campaign you could see the AI was awful, and here in the jungle it is even more obvious. They don't react when their buddy gets killed in front of them, sometimes they don't see the player and sometimes they see him even when cloaked, sometimes they don't know where to go and run around like crazy even though I am right next to them...
- First level had very bad framerate and it also crashed few times. I played C2 with stable 50-60FPS, but here it sometimes even went between 20-30. Lowering the resolution and graphics didn't help. The 2nd and 3rd ran much better, at around 45 FPS, and never crashed, but those were also a bit smaller I think.
- First level had a bit weird lighting, too bright.
- For some reason marines are super tough, it takes like 4 head shots to kill them.
- Very basic story.
