There was an idea to cover tanks from all sides with such umbrellas, but as I said it became needless.

this idea is still alive today. look at the extra armor that the us army strykers have. looks like a grate held about 2 feet from the hull to stop HEAT rounds.

Description

Before ERA appeared there was such soviet tank protection against cumulative shels - Umbrella! This shield had 60 kg, the distance between armor and umbrella was 1800 mm. When cumulative shell hit this shield, shell gaps, cumulative effect dissipates and thus cumulative flow fly serious distance before it can reach the armor. Tests proved that this protection is highly effective, but after cteation of T-72 tank this protection became useless. This protection was tested on T-54, T-55 and T-62 tanks.
