The Ground probably Collapsed from the Tanks weight , since its at the Edge.
I don't know what allies exactly did with THIS tank, but I'll tell you about one interesting tactic of T-34 tanks. Some times during tank attack they didn't even shoot in enemy tanks - they ran into enemy tanks with such strong power thus they could crash or even capsize. Those are real facts :)

he is not having a rest... he is moving but just in one tread, its a photo so you cant tell, he must have done that to dodge incomming enemy fire
