The venerable sonic screwdriver is nothing short of a character itself on Doctor Who. Its abilities, appearance and impact constantly evolve, and regenerate, just like the Doctor.
The beloved Sonic has gone from a simple tool to repair or disassemble things to the Time Lord equivalent of a smart phone / smart device, with software, programming, remote sensors, relays and a whole host of other goodies. It's a safe bet that, just like the TARDIS, the sonic has been modified by the Doctor. Certainly a portion of his long years went into adding abilities and functions the original designers never had in mind.
Also of interest - some incarnations of the Doctor barely touch it, while others never leave it out of reach.
