I feel like it's a massive mismanagement of funds. Sure it looks amazing but I can get the same thing with CGI and an occulus rift; and it would obviously be significantly cheaper.

Basically I think the funds used to make these should have gone toward helping the poor, scientific progress, spreading God's word, etc.

I agree.

But if churches could have something like that it would still be pretty awesome. Who knows, maybe in the Kingdom Age they'll have Church's just like big Cathedrals.

Personally, I like the feeling of walking into a place like that, and feeling a sense of peace and faith. In Star Wars terms, it's like walking into the Old Jedi Temple.

Yeah, cathedrals are incredibly awe-inspiring. The size, the architecture, the plate-glass windows. It all just gives you a sense of how small you are.

Nevertheless, I would say that cathedrals are from a religious age, during which the 'Church' had not grasped the concept that WE are now the temple of the Holy Spirit, and simply considered these massive structures to be the Christian antithesis of Jewish synagogues. They certainly were not built merely as a place to gather in fellowship, but rather to maintain a subconscious atmosphere of power, under the influence of which the parishioners could for the most part only submit to the will of the church authorities.

Also, the architecture itself, although immensely skillful, often contains an incredible variety of pagan symbols, gargoyles, angels and demons.

On a personal level, perhaps the question is justified: Am I worshiping God, or the prowess of these walls?

Your right, we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit.
Which was something the church hadn't grasped back then.

Many of the Cathedrals were also built for the wrong reasons.
I remember when studying about art in that era that many of these church's were built competitively to see who could build the best one. They weren't built with the worship of God in mind, but rather who could bend over backwards and earn the church's respect, financial, and political backing.

For me I'm worshiping God. But as for the place where I do it, I wouldn't mind a structure such as this to do so. Even if I was the only one in the building at that time. There's something about the atmosphere of it that intrigues me.

Well,

Whenever someone says that such things are a mismanagement of funds, I like to bring up a story from Byzantium.

But in order for me to do this I'll have to go into story teller mode.

*leans back in easy chair, turns a few pages in book, and takes a smoke of his pipe*

In elder days, before the fall [of Constantinople], there was a great leader among the Rus[sians] who became disenfranchised with his pagan ways. So he sent emissaries to all the great religions of the world.

When they reached the holy city of Constantinople, they attended a service in the church of Hagia Sophia; Holy Wisdom. When the emissaries returned to their leader they said one thing of the church; "We no longer knew if we were in heaven or earth," And because of this report, the Rus became Christian, and brought millions into the fold.

And that is why I am not against grandiose churches, because, in humanity's struggle to get to heaven, some need a reasonable facsimile.

Description

A art piece of a Cathedral I found.

Imagine if you attended a Church like that.
With not just the architecture, but the atmosphere to fit it. A good place to worship God is always welcome.

Just remember, it's merely a place for the brethren to gather, worship, and share knowledge of God. So don't grow too attached to it.
