Yes, it's true. Settled by puritans :/. most of these people aren't extremists though. I actually volunteer at a chapel near where I live sometimes, people there are only moderately religious, enough so that they didn't mind at all when we showed the Harry Potter series. I don't think all religion is bad, and the world would still be just as screwed up without it...

US is sadly...mostly religious here. Part of it I think is due to isolationism from other vastly different religions (nurtures the religion by acting like it is the superior one and the others are evil, etc).

Regilion in America is something complex. It has maintained because a lot of the country has remained isolated, and there, religion is everything. In Rabbitkidney, Oklahoma, everyone meet at the church, and everyone is christian. The teachers in the local school come from this background, and don't know a thing about biology, instead, they promote their religion. MegaChurches, televangelists, poltician ; they maintain this state of social pressure on the individual, and that gives them money and power. After that, you end up with men like Rick Santorum.

That became possible because the religious right is a big chunk of the electorate. They're convinced, motivated, unlike their opponents. Their religion has given them, at the price of truth and reason : contacts, event to participate in, people to vote for, and a reason to live. Even know they're baptist, roman catholic, etc... that killed each other for centuries, they've rallied around issues like abortion to federalize under the word "christian". They've merged with the conservatives, and made a political chimera, a nationalist-theocratic ideology, based on the idea of a God driven land, that is never wrong. So they rewrite history, like in Texas.

The situation becomes incredibly complex when interest converge, and then you end up with a huge mess. Especially when you've a strictly two-partied system. Money from lobbies and super PAC fuel their expansion. they're given a legitimacy by moderates who can't quit the party, because ; where to go ?

Because they've such grip, they can then maintain the situation by passing legislation that prevent students from learning about evolution, for example. At the end, they want a theocracy, not better than Iran. With the same restriction ; abstinence only sex education (don't have sex). Gays don't exist, they chose to be gay, and other nonsense.

Generally I'd expect the north east and west coast to be the lightest.

Description

Even when USA is quite religious country, you can clearly see that situation of atheism is not hopeless in this country. In every country, there is every year less religious people. You can see that Mexico is VERY VERY religious country with percentage of atheists bellow 10%. And Canada has more atheists then USA
