Well the thing is, these stories were meant to give a sense of rule and morality at the time. We can see now how horrible these morals were compared to our own.
The Bible would actually be quite respected as a part of human history, but that's hard to even talk about right now considering what has been going on with the rise of atheism and the fall of Christianity.
A lot of the time we have to look at the bad in the Bible to show how morally depraved this god must've been in order to defend ourselves. Of course there is good stuff though, but mainly that comes in on the New Testament.
I do the same thing, but I threaten them with the Hansel & Grettle bit.
for instance "clean your room, or I'm gonna leave you in the woods."
they get cocky and think they can take it, but then I remind them there is no internet nor electricity out there apart from getting struck by lightning.
Religion is used by parents to control children, by making fearful at all times. It's sickening.
