Saw it in MYTHBUSTERS! This is just a myth, there is no way it could have worked, not with modern mirrors nor with bronze mirrors from the time.

if they used a parabola mirror like in this picture, it is only capabale of anything at a specific range +/- a few meters, and you have to burn at the same spot for a pretty long time to cath it with fire. A ballista firing pots with greek fire is much more effective, reliable and have longer range.

Archimedes invented that stuff. and guess what. IT WORKED. modern scientists prooved with experiments that this was possible. also, he made many more weapons but the fire in the bibliothek of alexandria and the romans destroyed most of the documents.
