Open-Source reimplementation of Westwood’s Command & Conquer: Red Alert game engine, updated to use the hardware acceleration of modern video cards using OpenGL and OpenAL for sound playback. It runs natively on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The game was designed with modifiability in mind, but is not identical to the original. Campaigns and mods made for the legacy game won't work out of the box.

These guys are doing a hell of a job by bringing these awesome, classics to today's gamers.

Most of the featured games' official releases are incompatible or simply unplayable on machines these days. There have been many remakes of them on various engines, most being full conversion mods for other games of the same genre. This engine is by far the most accurate to original and provides best modernized rendition of these classics.

It meets every expectation I have and has been thoroughly combed for bugs, meaning it checks the most important boxes. It runs as smoothly as a word document, to boot.

There are three variations of Westwood's classic RTS titles supported so far; Red Alert, Command & Conquer and Dune 2000. I have read that there's an entirely new one on its way, Tiberian Sun, which was my 2nd favourite of the Westwood series, so I am very excited for this.

As an actively ongoing project, I cannot comment on the content of future implementations, but I imagine that, based on their track record so far, it will be just as good or better.

OpenRA earns a 10 from me mostly because of its attention to detail - these guys are working hard to bring gamers a set of timeless RTS games that should never be forgotten. I am certainly looking forward to seeing where it goes in the future, but would continue to enjoy playing it with my mates even if it never changed.
