I think this image is a good demonstration of the enemies (Vortigaunts in this case) and level design in Half-Life: there are 2 enemies, one is closer to player than another and they are attacking. Some levels in Half-Life are dark or dim rooms and corridors and the place in this picture is a good example. This picture also demonstrates the advanced lighting in Half-Life: the light in the room, where the second Vortigaunt stands (not the one which is closer to the player), is nice and there are also colored lights in front of the vending machines.

Dead in 1 second? I play it on hard and I'm still getting my 100 hp and atleast 50 to 70 armour. Though it depends on the skills of the Player. I've been playing this game since 2002 :P.

they are called islave's not vortigaunts that is half-life 2
islave is just the model name, Vlave never bothered giving them specific names in Half life 1. But they are still called Vortigaunts, because that's what they are.
In "Half-Life Source SDK" or "SDK" of HL go to:
'islave.cpp' -> 'LINK_ENTITY_TO_CLASS' and you look this:
the 1st: "LINK_ENTITY_TO_CLASS( monster_alien_slave, CIslave);"
AND THE 2nd: "LINK_ENTITY_TO_CLASS( monster_voltiguant, CIslave);"
Then... Why VALVe Change the name of This Aliens???
because this aliens are 'Slaves' (Alien Slave).
but, the original name of this alien is: 'Vortigaunt',
