If you are confused of what version of Doom 3 you need to run latest mods, then read this article.

In the past months I've been bombed by countless e-mails and private messages in various sites about the DLL API version Doom 3 error.
It seems a lot of people have difficulty to check their Doom 3 version, confusing the patch 1.3 with the 1.3.1.

Is just a little number, but it changes a lot, because mods with custom dlls, need a specific version of the game.

So you have that API DLL error and think to have the right version of the game? Well you haven't, so read below.

Readme text files, those damn text files. Most of the people just don't read them for unknown reasons, but before starting mailing about some problems, this is the first thing to check.
Usually this text file contains all the information about the mod, including installation instructions and the version of the main game required to run the mod. So in the case of Doom 3 if you read 1.3.1. required,
thats the one update you need.

There is a simple way to see what version you are running the game. So, run Doom 3, open up the console, to do so press CTRL+ALT+TILDE, for some european keyboards the TILDE is the slash down the ESC button.
Now you have your console open, you will see some random lines you won't need to know what they are about. You have to look at the bottom right of the console.

There is the version number, so here the differences about patch 1.3 and patch 1.3.1:

1.3 = DOOM
1.3.1 = DOOM

You see the last number is different.

The last way to check if the game is updated to the latest patch, is to press that button on the mainmenu with written on it UPDATE. This button will check automatically the latest version, and it will ask you to download the patch if needed. So give it a try.

I know not everyone is into that tech stuff about patches and version numbers and I blame Id Software for not just calling the latest patch 1.4. But well, with this article I hope to solve the problems of who didn't figured out the differences about patches, and the DLL error.

this is not the problem. the problem is that the system doesn't support older mods, and the developer have to update it

i run 1.3 only and all my mods are made for 1.3 as well, however none of them includes any .dll files, ie theyll run under any patch, the reason i dont run 1,31 is because a-its for vista primarily (which i dont have and never will) and b-mostly mp related, and i dont play doom mp, and the four times i did attempt to run 1.31 it ended in me having to reinstall doom... so im not going near it again, anyhow there are some small mods that enables the player to switch between patches on the spot, no idea if they work

Just wondering, is there a patch for the UK release? Everytime I try to install the patch, it can't tell what version I'm running. It's a full, legal retail copy with a retail RoE installed

Instead of wasting time checking version and installing patches one by one, install this instead Moddb.com
