You wake up in a dark alley, not knowing anything. What has happened anyway? You struggle after the truth and answers. Answers you want to know in the darkness and fear, which makes your heartbeat race like violent blows against your head. Where do "they" come from? What has happened? Are you just turning insane? The time is up; you can't stay there reading your smses forever. It's time to head out and find the answers. Cry of Fear is a singleplayer modification of Half-Life 1 which brings you the horror you've always been afraid of. It's a total conversion of Half-Life 1, which means it uses NO Half-Life 1 content or other peoples' files. It's all made exclusively by the developers. It also uses new gaming styles that you will rarely find in Half-Life mods, such as advanced cutscenes and other stuff that will be revealed at a later date.
This is a new campaign that is being made by Andreas Rönnberg (Team Psykskallar) and the Cry of Fear community. A total of 9 mappers have made this campaign, and it's basically the sequel to the community collab 1 campaign.
The campaign will be released together with patch 1.4, the 2nd of august.

That's right, it's your mom!
Yeah, because she saw your ugly *** face. :D
This is one of the problems I've always kind of had with the thematics of Cry of Fear. Self harm is strongly correlated with many forms mental illness, so sure, it's related to the game, but unless it's actually written into the story purposefully, it just seems like a cheap way to shock people.
I mean half this trailer was just Simon cutting himself vigorously, that's uncouth at best, and at worst it's actually offensive.
Offensive to people who self-harm I mean, you're just feeding off the stigma it already has.
I completely agree, the use of self-harm as shock value doesn't really bode well in this circumstance.
This comment really didn't deserve to get buried.
Cry of Fear is one of the most misunderstood mods ever made. I'm not sure if you understand, but the developers and community are well acquainted with depression and anxiety, including its many symptoms such as self-harm. This was made as a horror mod, but it's a lot more than just a cheap way of scaring people, and it's not in any way designed to make fun of those with these problems. It's an insight into the life of those who actually DO experience this, and we should know.
(buried)
No one who had ever had serious problems with depression or anxiety would ever use it in the way that this trailer does. I'm telling you that for an absolute fact. I have a friend who is CURRENTLY grappling with depression, self-harm, and schizophrenia, and she would be offended THE **** OUT by this trailer.
I think you have a depression gazor....that depression is attention deficit. And I'm sure you're cutting yourself right now pleasuring by the fact that we giving you the attention by hates. Are you that lonely that hate has become a form of attention to you?
Okay, so you officially don't understand a single term you just used.
Would someone care to explain to this guy what ADD, depression and self-harm are and how they actually work.
I agree but I think they need to put a warning before watching the trailer
I know how your friend feel
I wish she would feel better and happy

It's not so much the mod itself, and it's not that I feel they are making fun of these topics, it's that they're just lazily feeding off the social stigma. Using shots of Simon vigorously self-harming for half the trailer is lazy, because it just plays on people's existing mentality of "Only the seriously mentally disturbed self-harm". You only have to look at the sheer number of "Haha emo" comments that the screenshot from this CS got on facebook to know what people's opinions are, and demonizing it in the way that this trailer does just encourages that.
(buried)
So no, I don't think they're making fun of it, and perhaps the CS itself deals with the topic of self-harm tentatively rather than just for shock value, but this trailer itself is deeply offensive and pretty socially irresponsible.
Okay, scrap every war game then, since it's offensive for people who's dying in wars. Scrap every game that is offensive in some way.
(buried)
That's the "other **** exists" argument, and it isn't a usable argument. Other offensive things existing isn't a justification for your specific offensive thing.
Again, my problem is with this trailer specifically.
(buried)
Also good job deleting someone else's valid point on the self-harm thematics and the community's response to them. You're simultaneously fighting for a right to say whatever you want through your work, and censoring people who have a strong problem with the things you want to say.
hes got a point ever game has to get blamed to be offensive in some way, just because it aims towards killing one race it gets banned in that country ww2 games get banned in germany most of them
(buried)
Yeah, we have this weird mentality right now that war games are somehow totally inoffensive despite being one of the most appalling genres out there.
And I'm not talking about ******* 9th Dynasty Samurai RTS games or whatever, I mean the ******** "semper fi" ones with needless amounts of throat stabbing, because apparently that's what gives the average gamer a boner these days.
I deleted Hogsys comment, since he's always trying to be a ******, no matter what, hence why I haven't deleted yours, though I'm ******* tempted to.
So yeah, go bitch somewhere else then if you think this is offensive. Why not the CoD community? Tell them how much it's wrong with war.
(buried)
His comment on this occassion was fine, there was nothing wrong with it other than it made you look bad.
I doubt anyone in the CoD community is in any way disposed to intelligent debate, I hopped on this because I (perhaps naively) have a higher opinion of the modding community.
Okay, cool for letting us know what you think.
Now, please go away. You are drowning this page with ****.
what are you mard-assing about? this is a horror game, crazy things happen, stop being such a baby and **** off moaning

Amusing, I don't think anyone who actually spends any time on a modding site can use that quip without irony.
Maybe you should go outside gazorn, and try to realise how much nobody else cares.
OMG, this is so cool! Bring this game in store and take my money!
oh ****.....this looks great.custom sounds and textures. people really need to make custom models it be great, to bad it takes time to do, but this is defintly worth the weight.
It'd* too* definitely* wait*
Grat now i can freak the f**k out all over :D
(buried)
why do you put the dates backwards it needs to be 08/02/2012 not 02/08/2012
In Europe the day comes first and considering how this is a mod that was made in an european country, it would make sense for it to be in that format.
I'm on a team that has members from both Europe and America (among other places) we do year/month/day so nobody gets confused :D
that sux, the normal is the complete opposite
america is not all over the world ...
It's really a shame to see so much talent and skill coming together for a mod, which looks like a great ride and then have the people who made the mod display themselves publicly as completely socially oblivious and ignorant. Presenting an offensive and inconsiderate trailer like this and then showing no understanding whatsoever about why the trailer is problematic, even reacting with aggression really drags the whole project down. Not cool at all.
I do not care if people find it offensive. I really don't.
You see, I'm not making the game to lick your ***, I'm doing it because I want to share something unique, and not some **** you've already seen.
If you don't like it, leave then. Nobody asked you to like the trailer, or me.
(buried)
You're still expected to show the same level of social responsibility as everyone else, you ***. You don't have a right to offend people.
"You're still expected to show the same level of social responsibility as everyone else, you ***. You don't have a right to offend people."
Pahahahah yes he does!
Hey buddy try watching some stand up comedy from George Carlin i bet you will burst a blood vessel just watching it!
"other than of course to appease you flailing infants."
Your the only flailing infant in this place any truly mature adult would understand that in the grand scheme of things EVERYTHING is offensive and would move on.
You see today's society is so obsessed with being as politically correct as possible that it has bred a entire generation of children who believe that the world and other people have to mold to how they want it to be or else they will cry and cry and cry until the thing that they are ****** at is forced to become more politically correct.
ruMpel please don't listen to this guy every artist on the planet knows that political correctness is the death of creativity and freedom of speech for that matter if this guys comments indicate anything.
After all the video game medium even attempting to approach the topic of warfare or self harm in any way apparently makes this guys blood boil.
Here is some advice gazornonplat if you don't want to see any kind of media that approaches any risque topic or takes any risks then go back to playing Mario although scratch that because i have actually seen people who are offended at Mario because they think he is disrespectful towards Italians so how about you just re-frame from approaching any kind of fiction period because there is bound to be something "offensive" in it and we cant have that now can we?
(buried)
Thank you for missing the point of every comment I posted.
There's a big difference between covering a risky topic in your media or art (which is totally fine) and doing it in poor taste (which is not). My objection is solely to this trailer, which is guilty of the latter, but I'm hoping the custom story itself will be more tactful.
My issue is not with the topics, it's the delivery. If the custom story itself has themes of self-harm intelligently and sincerely written into it, then great, but all this trailer does it use for shock value because of its existing social stigma.
Again, I am totally TOTALLY okay with the subject matter, I'd just like it to have been more tentatively or purposefully dealt with in this trailer.
Dude its a trailer what do you want it to do?
The trailer was just meant to show a little bit of game play and freaky stuff in order to intrigue the player into wanting to play the mod.
Did you want the trailer to be like 30 minutes long so that it can talk about self harm?
Understand that a trailer can do very little without spoiling things for the player and to get offended for that reason is unbelievably stupid.
(buried)
Here: http://ohnovideogames.com/self-harm-and-cry-of-fear
Someone else (who is evidently offended by this too) explains the problem with it far better than I have.
I think ruMpel explained pretty well in that article that the self harm is more based on the character of Simon rather then the theme of self harm.
You see just because Simon harms himself does not actually mean that they are implying that all people that harm themselves are mentally insane. All they are saying is that SIMON and ONLY SIMON is insane and harms himself.
Nothing more nothing less.
And on that note you and the blog writer are reading in too this way to deeply and drawing conclusions that are not actually there by using wild mass guessing on what the mod creator intends with this trailer.
It's not about his intentions, it's about what impressions the trailer gives on nothing but its face value. That's the point, I'm not reading into this or guessing at all, whereas you are, by assuming something about the creators intentions that you don't know at all.
Erm i said in the last comment that i read the article and payed attention to what ruMple said on the matter I'm not assuming about the creators intentions i read the creators intentions on the actual article.
"It's not about his intentions, it's about what impressions the trailer gives on nothing but its face value."
So then its somehow ruMples fault that some people incorrectly took the trailer on face value?
Also i don't think anyone else here was taking that impression from the trailer except for you because again you came to this conclusion by reading too deeply into a one minute trailer and think its offensive to people who self harm.
(buried)
And for the record, I think political correctness sucks too. I'm not offended by self-harm, my issue is that many people who self-harm WILL BE OFFENDED by this trailer.
Also warfare in games is fine, but Call of Duty is pretty ******* appalling, and sadly it represents the norm right now as far as that genre is concerned.
