Conquest is a real-time, multi-player space warfare game that was originally written in RATFOR for the VAX/VMS platform by Jef Poskanzer and Craig Leres in 1982. It was the early predecessor to Netrek.

Really you just need max shields, max fuel, and max warp to penetrate it.
And if you leave a ship vacant - make sure you are at warp 0 (and possibly well hidden with the cloak, shields up...) or orbiting a planet. You dont want your ship heading into the barrier at low warp with shields down.
