Hello everyone,

This is my first ever map. I know there are a lot of things that need work but it is still a very early WIP.

so basically I am going for a horror style level, kind of like resident evil 1-3 style.

all comments and crits are welcome.

If there is one thing I have learnt since reviewing games is that it dont have to be dark in order to scare players. Lights are needed, so add more. The third screenshot is great, lighting like that is perfect. Anything darker then that is just over-kill.

a nice, easy way to give a level more depth, is to add some simple shapes along the walls and ceilings.

Carefull not to overkill though. Add like some pipes along a wall. Like a larger one (leg sized) towards the bottom, or a few medium/small sized ones toward the top. You can also add something as simple as a block to give the wall a "beam" look, even using the same texture as the wall. Just use alt+right click to alline perfectley. (Be sure the texture is highlighted on the face next to the one you use alt+RC on)

some propr that looks like they could belong there could make it more interesting too
again, try not to overdo it :) having them is good, to much is bad :)

Hmm, for a first map the texturing is well done. Congrats :D I however aren't going to jump the conclusion about you creating the table and shelves though, stock entities? Well nevermind, great work. Which engine are you using? I'm not familiar with shorted engine names, lol :)

Great job

Looks like source ^^ And the props are standard ones.

My 2 cents: For a first map not half bad but the first two pictures/rooms are too dark and a little bit too empty.

Another easy thing to do to add is learn how to make and place decals well, that can make a huge difference, like a bloodtrail thro a door or osmethging

do these rooms have any kind of global illumination (skylight), or is it just the local lightsources?
The combination and placement of textures and materials is varied and well-done. The look is a bit bland though, but that may be in the nature of the scenes. Not half-bad, but still feeling empty - which of course happens with WIP. Nice start!

To give it more atmosphere, also add some nice soundscapes (ambient sound), if you haven't already that is (hard to tell from screenies :] ).
As for your geometry, like it's been said, try adding beams/support or something similiar to break up plain walls/ceilings you got going there.

Hey thanks for all the crits guys,

I took all of yesterday to work on my map and I fixed the lighting as well as I started working on the outdoor environment. I will post some update pictures very shortly,

thank you everyone.

ok update time. I am still having indoor lighting problems, so here is some pics of the outdoor part of the map I am working on. If anyone knows of any really good lighting tutorials that would be great.

Update

fixed lighting. I about ready to call this one finished. Just because I want to work on a map where I can use reference images on my side. I got something in mind but I want to wrap this up first.

Picture 2 after the Update: That lamp doesnt fit the room it is in. (Warning Oppinion)
Picture 7 after the Update: The ceiling looks more like a floor :D
Overall really good looking :)

Looking very nice, good on your for taking critisim this early on. You will have a good future in mapping as long as you can let people tell you what isn't good in your work, instead of only accepting the complements.

Ok guys,

I said I was going go wrap this level up but I thought about it and it is only about 20% done to what I would like it to be.

I will keep working on this and keep you guys updated.

I added some pillars and ceiling supports to make my halls more detailed and less plain and boring. Also added a pond outside.
