i thun kthere should be mods for the source engine that are based on games like Fallout, Crysis, stuff like that.
the problem is, there is a new engine that valve deveoped that is going to be released with portal 2.
so once the files for that new engine come out, developers should work on new mods. also, it could be a rumor that it is in portal 2, but half life episode 3 has been confirmed going to run on a new engine

Intellectual property law says no.

Deus Ex Mod support would be nice

Unless you charge money for it and the EULA doesn't prohibit modding, law says yes.

Every EULA I've ever seen says no!!!! to taking content from one game and moving it to another, so although you're technically correct, ambershee's statement is more realistic.

Well if you take the content and move it, then it could be problematic. But a remake which can be "inspired" by another game shouldn't be a law issue.

Yes, but a game inspired by a game is not a remake ;)

[...] should be mods for the source engine that are based on games like Fallout, Crysis, stuff like that

We are not talking about a remake, but rather the same concept on a diffrent engine. You never make it a 1:1 copy of the other game, simply because of the engine itself has limitations or new/diffrent features. So that's why you base it on that game and call it inspired (another smart way to avoid using the trademark?) by it. It allways differs from the original one.

And again I ask for an information source about this new engine you're talking about :)

I suggest you try making a mod based on Warcraft/Starcraft/Diablo and I promise you that you'll get a lecture in law from Acti-Blizzard's lawyers before you can say "inspired".
EDIT: And don't forget to put a Metallica soundtrack in your game!

According to your logic things like Open Office and Armagetron Advanced wouldn't exist (or do you want to tell me microsoft wouldn't sue those guys working on O.O. and making them lose millions of $ because people can open MS files without having MS software?).

Unless you ask money for it or use trademarks (Names Logos etc) you are free to make anything. That's what open source is. Prove me wrong (links!).

It happens all the time, but those projects usually get swept off the internet in their entirety - you may not actually be legally stepping on anyone's toes, but it's not like you can actually afford to challenge their Cease and Desist order.

Someone should make a mod on World in Conflict like the New movie Battle Los Angeles Just for suggestions.

I would like to see strategy mods based on interesting shooter games (ex crysis, halo,Turning point fall of liberty, Homefront, Freedom Fighters), and I failed to find a RTS (space-based like SW: EAW) mod about Starcraft or Univers at War, and mods based on popular RTS games for Turn-Based games. The content is there, there is only a need for skilled moding.

No new engine. I think that guy is the victim of an April Fool's joke.
Portal 2 was made on the Source engine.

And even if Valve were to release a new engine, I don't think they would do it when releasing the sequel to an off-shot game like Portal. They are most likely working on a new engine but it's more likely that it will be released with HL3 or a completely new IP.

Portal 2 is probably just running on a more modified version of source.

The point of a mod is to experiment with new ideas and not worry about funding. And who knows If people like your idea then it can be made into its own game! (Portal, Counterstrike....)

I just dont get why anyone would want to make a remake of something that already exists? Sure a mod to update an existing game could be great, (new updated textures, models etc. perhaps even with the new developers tech) it could be good for certain games such as a good old classic like Half-Life with outdated graphics and technology, (although in my opinion what the guys are doing with Black Mesa I think is over kill honestly and can not really be justified as a mod, but a pure remake)... But why on earth would you want to remake current games such as crysis and fallout, even more so, why on source?

Wheres the creative and originality Zep? why not create your own IP? Why you want to steal someone elses IP?

Because mods are free?

They may be free, yes but theres a reason why crysis was made on crytech and not source... but i suppose if you want to waste your time creating crysis: lame edition on source... go for it.... Still doesn't answer my question though.

What I meant was OP wanted free games.

(Also, your quote is hilarious in context.)
