hi, im Sam and im wonder if it would be better to pay the 20 bucks for milkshape. It seems like an extremely easy program to use. And would i be able to use milkshape with HL2. (for modeliling and stuff.)

Samelot, Milkshape is a low poly modeler, and my guess is it wouldn't be able to handel the high poly models that Half Life 2 uses. Unless, that by that time Milkshape has grown further and will be able to support larger poly counts. G-Max is a cut down version of 3D Studio Max, and has more bells and whistles than Milkshape.

Whaddayamean? Milkshape can handle up to a polycount of 32767 triangles, anything more than that = crash. I experimented that meself.

GMax has an EXTREMELY steep learning curve and support for games isn't very good like it promised, start with MS3d instead.

well i think it would be best for me to start of with ms3d. and im not ready for GMAX, or blender. ms3d looks good. it can support a good amount of games, and ive expierienced in the tutorial its very easy texturing tools. in blender it was impossible to textue, and im sure it is hard in Gmax too. maybe someday ill be ready for those big boy programs...

uhh, how many triangles are in a polygon

A triangle is a polygon, and a quad is a polygon also. But since all games and video cards only supports triangles, you'll be working with tri's. They will be your polygons.

Blender isn't hard to texture in. You just have to read a tutorial or two, and your good to go. I don't do to much texturing just because I totaly suck at it. No it is quite easy in blender as I just said a second ago. If you feel like going ahead and getting blender, feel free to pm me or email, I'll be glad to help you out.

Well, since he already bought MS3D, the point is moot, but I'll post anyway for those who have problems with the gmax code.

I grabbed a copy the other day. And I like it. Perhaps me and blender (and Milkshape) got off on the wrong foot, but I'll remedy that. gmax registration codes are fickle things. You see, discreet would be happy to give you one, but Hotmail is a wee bit anal at times. It's spam filter sucks. I would know as I have to email my Gov't teacher via my Yahoo! account for essay topics. The hotmail won't take it (His AOL account). Granted, there is a filter for that, but I'm too lazy. Long story short, use a Yahoo! address when requesting a registration code.

Oh, and grab a copy of tempest and and 3d exploration if you want to do some raytracing indirectly via gmax. That's just for those good little boys and girls who like the gmax interface (which takes a long d__n time to get used to) and are too cheep to buy MS3D (which already includes a very nice conversion suite). Or 3D Studio Max for that matter.

HL2SDK comes with Softimage XSI. That's an animator used for facial linking to get unblemished speech and appropriate expression. Not too useful for modelling.

Just nab GMax if you wanna work on the cheap :)
