Karuto made a very helpful thread about the FPS Creator, so i thought it would be a good idea to show a program that can make RTS games.

RTS Starter Kit

You also need Torque

Watch an example movie in QuickTime or Windows Media

Hmm, I might consider purchasing Torque if I ever get the money.

if i wanted to make a standalone game, and i had full knowlage, i would deff. get it because of the incredible built in terrain generator that was shown to me by deathmaster.

This looks really cool, I'll look into it in the futre.

Whoa, Torque looks pretty amazing with just the terrain generator =D

I'll probably buy it when I'm in college. I plan to attend one that has you get into groups to make your own standalone video games :)

How much is it any way? Probably expensive like all other things game related.

$100 per coder for Torque.

yeah. thats not that bad for a coding program or whatever. if you have patience to learn it, its totally worth it.

Torque is a mere 100 bucks - well worth the money

Its not a coding program, its a full graphic engine.

Tribes 1/2 are torque-based, two of the best mp games ever.

Torque is one of the nicest projects in the gaming world - similar to the new Unreal engine, its a landscape/FPS hybrid engine with an embedded scripting system. When you use the Torque engine, you code in the scripting language, not with the source. There is a license you can get for free redistribution, and they also have an online store site if you want to sell your games through them. There's a different price if you want to make retail games to sell yourself.

Anyways, they're very nice people with a solid product for independants. I wish that more TC modders would just use Torque - that would let them give their game away for free to anyone who wants it, rather than just the players of the game platform. As nice as Red Orchestra is, you still need UT2k4 to play it - meanwhile, you can play Legends (a Tribes 1 clone on Torque) for free.

wow.. thats stunning. I have about 1200 bucks and I might actually dig into it for Torque. That looks really cool and fun, but I dunno because I have a problem with dedication so if I bought it I would be pissed if I just dropped it after the first couple of months :P

yeah. torque is only $100. then again so is visual c++....

You do realise the difference between the two, don't you? C++ is a compiler/debugging tool, whereas Torque is a fully realised game engine. It could take up to a year for an inexperienced modder to code an engine in C++ even close to equal to Torque.

Or you could use Quake. It's open-source and free.

i do know theres a difference of course, i just mentioned how they both have the same price. and why does everyone say quake is free? the only download close to the full version of quake is the 1st episode.

Quake isn't free, but the Quake Engine has been released under the GPL, so you can use it for free in any project as long as you don't use any original Quake content, and make your source code availible.

As soon as I turn 18 and can actually dip into my bank account I'm definitely going to look into getting Torque.
