Please excuse my ignorance but I do not know how to operate any of the mod makers
I have got with various games I have bought, but WORLDCRAFT seems to be the most used, I have read the help files etc but all these programmes presume you know the basics of map building an I do not even know that - where can I learn this as I have some great ideas for single player maps - Thanks Killermouse

Google.com

Search for 'worldcraft+tutorial+map'

That should be all you need.

That article doesn't explain HOW to mod, it just explains what you need to know before starting a mod.

Programs:

Modeling - Milkshape, 3ds max
Mapping - Depends on what game you wish to mod for
2d art/textures/skinning - Paint shop pro
Coding - Requires C/C++ knoledge, and requires MSVC++ for compiling

there are numerous places to go to find out how to actually mod. What exactly are you looking to do?

I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

Thanks for all the advice guys, their is a mod that I have and I want to know if it is possible to edit it and add more info to the mod or is this not allowed, I really do not know
if modifying someone else mod is legal or right.

It is possible to edit.. I think you need to know C++. But you should always ask the owner first.. :)

Actually, it is only possible if the mod is open source.

Yeah, there's no such thing as source decompilation - if that exisited who knows what would be going on and you could edit everything!

I think there are decompilers for Quake I mods. In order to mod (in terms of coding) knowing C++ is a MUST. The best game to start out on imo is Duke Nukem 3D (its so easy to modify what CAN be modified). I don't think its illegal to modify mods without permission but it is immoral. Don't take my word for it though; I don't want to be accused of giving bogus advice.

It is required by law that all quake mods are open source, so naturaly the sorces can be decompiled.

but you can still do new things with it ;)

Yeah, but since then I got too lazy to mod. And then I forgot how to, and then I got too lazy to re-learn how to mod. Every now and then I modify a game to fix a minor annoyance, but that's it.

lol sorry mike... If I were you I would look around for some beginner tutorials on mapping, I use Valve Hammer Editor but Worldcraft is just as good to start with, but yeah I was kinda lost on mapping myself until cHIs provided me with some good tutorials and now, I can make halfway decent maps :) well anywats good luck with everything!

Thanks for the help,
i.e. Duke Nukem 3D has a level modeller and from what I understand, you can use this to change a existing level
to suite yourself, and all I want to know is how do you find
out how to use them, most of them presume you know something allready about alltering levels, and I must admit that I find the instructions confussing simply because I do not know where to start,
All I want to do is build maps for myself for "Total Anihillation" and "Starcraft" and "Dark Reighn" etc
please excuse spelling and use level editors for "Quake" "Unreal" Please help - Thanks Mike

Actually, starcraft comes with a very good map editor, I taught myself how to use it but i'm sure there are a lot of tutorials.

Quake uses worldcraft, and here is a very good site for that: Planetquake.com

if he wants to map and learn how to do it easy then work with UT first

then about a month or so mapping in ut you can move to qk or hl.
