I'm sure some of you saw that the jobs adds were plastered all over with Goodgames, ads. I have met with and applied for a job there, and I have to warn you:

the studio is a mediocre copy-machine of more successful games and concepts. The studio ist inherited by the most normal and unartistic people. Everybody works there as if it is just another bureau job. They are one of those companies where everything is smile and shine, but nothing is sincere. They have the most incapable human resources staff on the planet, which is why they are still looking to fill positions (for months) that could easily be recruited by someone with some knowledge.

Short: it's a studio for those who gave up on their creativity or on the hope that games can be more than a business model. The problem of the beautiful town of Hamburg ist that it thinks itself at the heart of the game's industry. What we really have are Goodgames and Bigpoint, which do nothing but create horrible games, copying other games, really. If you are looking for a city that is sponsoring game development, don't come to Hamburg! Go to Berlin! Or best of all: don't go to Germany at all! There is nothing to find here. Crytek was a rare incident. Won't happen here again.

Blue Byte (The Settlers), Related Designs (Anno sequels), Crytek, and probably more - you're seriously underrating your German developers.

Not to mention Innogames and Gameforge which pioneered many browser based games.

So? There is also Daedalic games in Hamburg, which has some acclaim. But just like BlueBytes most of that was ten years ago. There are no AAA studios in Germany besides Crytek, any more. Yet, in the city hall they think they are innovation-funding here. It's ridiculous. This city has half a billion Euro to build an opera house nobody wants. But when it comes to game funding and startup investments, we have less now than two years ago. I criticise the appeal of Hamburg city, which likes to present itself as a game capital and the reality of it, which is comprised of shitty companies like Goodgames and Bigpoint. Those are the big players here and they determine the quality and scope of the scene events in Hamburg. So what do you get when a bunch of non-original, non-innovative and strictly profit-interested studios take over your city's game scene? You get just that:more profit oriented, non-original stuff and people of the same fashion.

That's pretty obvious if you just look at their website. The UK and Scandinavia seems to be where the creative game development is at in Europe at the moment.

Anyway, as an example Yager are based in Berlin - so don't count Germany out so easily ;)
