Jurassic Park: Trespasser

I always thought Hitman: Codename 47 was the first game to use ragdolls but I was wrong.

A quick search on google revealed that a game which almost pre-dates Half Life ( I think they came out at roughly the same time in 1998) had ragdolls/and shadowing and *gasp* bump mapping. A Riva TNT was apparently the card of choice to get it running.

When the game was released it got polar reviews, but as far I can tell it looked OK, and it was probably fun exploring the 15km square island. Did any of you guys ever play the game? Was it good/bad whatever?

My big question is: Why does an 8 yr old PC game have such cool features and yet other developers seemed to take a long time to jump on the band wagon. Was it due to hardware not being up to scratch or just the developers fear of the unknown.

i played it (and finished it).
its from 1998 and the first game to use physics (rigid body to be exact), and yes it had real-time shadowing and yes it had bump mapping.
the shadows didnt allways looked as nice but werent ugly.
the bump mapping, well you had to look realy close to notice it, but when you do > same as shadowing.
and the clevage: you were a woman(as you can see:)) and the tatoo on your breats was a heat meter, if the tatoo was full color you were dead.
the gfx were realy nice for its time i think.
the maps were mostly jungle but the map inside tehe city is awesome
but the game had some serious downsides:
* it was ment to be a horror shooter, but it was allways day and there was no fog so you could see enemies aproaching from far away, so no horror
* the game was rushed, many (anoying)bugs
but the game had some "premiers" like (mentioned begore) ragdolls, bump mapping and shadows.
but allso others:
ironsighting :) you needed to move your hand to line up the scope.
i think it was a good step in the right direction but not a perfect one.

Dark_Raver9 said all you have to about this game. i think the reason it did not get the appreciation it should have received has been that the game was ahead of its time. like many splendid games if they come to the wrong time people don't appreciate it. the horror part indeed is not present at all. shooting the dinos is rather easy once you know how to adjust your gun. the only thing that can harm you is if you run out of bullets. also the AI is sometimes strange. i tried once getting a t-rex to follow me to a stegoraur as i wanted to see some carnage... but for some reason he always turned around half way to the stego. looks like i had not been juicy enough to run after me :| . there are a couple of things that they could have made better in my opinion:
- varying daytime or a bit of fog
- able to carry more than simply two objects. it's ok to be able only to carry one big gun and a small one but the places you had to use key-cards you always had one gun and one card or only two cards in the worst case. that's a bit annoying.
- allow you to carry guns over from one map to the other. they way it is here you loose all objects entering a new map
- allow you to pick the clip from a gun and carry them around. once a gun is empty it is useless to you. this way you could put in a new clip. no need for filling up clips ( as you are supposed to be a dead stupid women having no idea about how guns work ) but changing a clip i guess even the biggest dumbass manages to pull of :D
- more things to read. that speaker is annoying and it would have been a bit more of fun to find that stuff out yourself instead of getting it 'talked' to you out of nowhere

otherwise for sure a damn good game the day it came out. some high-definition project would make this ggame graphically even more interesting. modding this game is a big hack but i've seen pages around with some tools and informations. for high-def it should be enough i think.

Playing the demo and I don't know how to get down :S

Mar 19 2006 Anchor

WOW... thats friggen hard...

Chunky think about physics... and the large cabin sitting precariously on small wooden legs.

I got down OK, and I dropped all the weapons off the side... but the raptors kill me. :(
I still cant believe this game is nearly 8 years old.

It was an ambitious game brought off poorly.

1. INCREDIBLY bad performance.

2. the control system was beyond awful.

That more or less kiled it.

you could even carry, fire, and pump a shotgun using only one hand ;P lol

aiming and physics owned everything for me... the game had many different features that were few years ahead of its times

I haven't played the game in some time, so maybe my memory is a bit off, but I don't know if I would qualify this game as having "ragdoll" physics, so much as it just had a loose interpretation of physics in general.

Typically, when killing a raptor or any other dinosaur, they always fell down in the same kneeling \ lying down position. If they were on a hill, they would then roll down it, never changing their stance but just rolling along like a log.The physics were pretty cool for its time, though there was absolutely no friction in the game world, which made some of the "stack these boxes up" puzzles exceedingly difficult, as they would typically shudder and slide atop one another until one went flying off in another direction.

I was disappointed that all of the "free roam all around Isla Sorna!" press was just a bunch of high concept marketing bullshit, when it actuality you were stuck wandering through many large, yet excruciatingly linear, environments. Transitioning between maps also meant having all of your weaponry disappearing, leaving you rather defenseless until you wandered across another stockpile of ammo.

All that aside, the game was still rather fun. The dinosaurs were the same models used for the CGI in the movie, transported over into this new game engine. That, and if you are a big Jurassic Park junkie like me, there are a lot of thrills to be had from simply wandering all over the island, watching the dinosaurs duke it out with their simplistic A.I. routines before chasing after you instead.

crates are ragdolls now? I didn't notice any bumpmapping when I played. Funny how much people are realizing this HL2 existed before HL nowdays.

THERE IS WATER "REFLECTION" AND RIPPLES IN REAL TIME THOUGH, EAT THAT MORROWIND LOL

If I were crazy, i'd say Virtua Fighter for the Genesis 32X (that specific version) had ragdoll for ring outs.
