Explain to me what these engines are good for.
I don't get the picture like if I install an engine my game works better with the game?

An engine is the core of a game in that it drivers rendering, physics, audio, networking, AI, scripting, resource management and what not else. Hence think of it like the motor in your car. The game is the car and the engine the motor. If you want to build a new car ( game ) then you need some sort of motor ( game engine ) to power it. That's what this list is for besides linking games with similar engines ( like people modding for an Unreal based game tend to look for games based on the same engine too ).

I hope this helped a bit.

EDIT: Rofl... one of the only times that I'm not the one being out-typed ;)

Games are built on Engines. Engines consist of things like the renderer (the component that makes graphics appear on the screen), audio, networking (sending data between computers for multiplayer games) and many other things, and the game logic is built on top of that. The purpose of having them on the site is to create a database of them all and link what game use what engine. Different engines have a different level of moddability, so it could will also help modders choose if they are unsure what they want to build their mod on

EDIT: Damn you DL. posted as I was typing mine.
