Here's the story, an alien planet (don't stop reading now ) is made completely uninhabitable because of a huge war on the planet. The aliens are forced to flee from the planet and adapt to life in space. However, the aliens soon run out of resources and search for alternate resources. They discover several resources that they can use, but these resources are limited. Thats where the mod comes in. This means huge battles in space, and you would probably have to collect resources from asteroids and stuff. There would be huge maps, and posibilities for solo and team game modes. If anyone has any ideas about what engine to use, ways to improve this plot, or if anyone is interested in helping to make this mod, please relply. Oh, and there would be super powerful weapons, but if they were to be fired too close to resources, they might be damage them. And there'd probably be some original weapons, instead of just the over-used plasma weapons and stuff like that. - Edited By a_llama On Sun 26th, Oct 2003 @ 5:36:50pm |

Kinda like Science & Industry in Space? There was gonna be a game like that called "The Rock" but it got canned in 1999. This was never done. DO IT! But not for Half-Life or Half-Life2, those are doubtful for such vast things... -- < insert subject games here >

Hmm... doom 3 seems like it would be good for something like this.. Actually, the more i think on it, doom 3 would be great for a lot of things.. Sounds like a good idea tho.. Is it like, shooting while harvesting resources? Hm.. sounds like a suitable thing to setup little missions and such with.. |

well, the xbox version didn't have vast maps... so i don't know if the pc version would be different. i was considering using half-life 2 actually... Battlefield 1942 has vast maps but it would probably be difficult to make this mod with that... any ideas? |

ut2k3/4?? maybe tribes: vengence has enhanced the unreal tourny 2k3 engine to cope with large terrain better. but that looks like the best choice. |

Quake 3 is also extremely neglected in the field of vast terrain. Believe me when I say it can easily be done with slight modification. Just play RtCW for an example (but that uses fogging, not such a brilliant example). There are some others out there too. HL2 can cope equally well, and it's probably your best bet on the basis that it's a fairly new title and there are a few people out there wanting to tackle it while it's still hot! |

I've made a huge Q3A map, then it crashed, Q3A isn't too big on it. -- < insert subject games here >

Q3A itself isn't, no. It does take a little modification to get it working correctly, as it likes to load and render everything before you play, rather than during play as necessary (ok, that can cause problems on lower-end machines). Actually, for large empty spacey maps and large similarily textured outdoor spaces, it would improve significantly, unless of course you stock it with an incredible amount of detail, where it would suddenly fail miserably. You have to be economic with Q3A. The largest map I've played on was actually some kilometers in either direction, it was just clever use of resources. I'd stick with HL2 though, to avoid having to do too much work. |

Doom3 can handle vast terrain, its just that all the videos/ screens you see are in small areas becuase of the level designers choice. |
||

Oct 28 2003 Anchor | |
Nope, D3 can't, per pixel lighting slows things down in LARGE areas (HL2 don't have that) so it is quite doubtful that d3 can handle anything vast. -- < insert subject games here >

I think the RTS version wouldn't be too hot, although a flight sim is what struck me from the original description. And for anyone who dares it; don't knock RTS's like CnC. They rule |
