Interesting! Let's see, if the Cryengine can keep up with Unity and Epic, who both already developed a massive community.

The CRYtech community is quite large, steams community is larger, they have this exclusive to steam, effectively merging steam to a development platform exclusively for the CRYENGINE, So you wont find unity being sold on steam, and i doubt you will see UE4 on steam any time soon, as unreal has its marketplace built into the UE4 Engine system, bypassing steam completely for content delivery.

Looks to be a new way of securing communities or building upon them, is to supply each with a unique development platform.

EPIC AAA engine battle commence! Who will open up next? I feel unity might be lagging behind in the license field.

Wish Zeni Max hadn't have screwed id Software, idTech5 couldn't been big a long time ago, And the Rage Tool Kit doesn't really make up for it :(

Wolfenstein The New Order could've had a editor and a modding community started already :(

But it is good to see Unreal and Crytech reaching out for a bigger community to fill the gap that's being made

And with what they are doing,
These 2 engines are going to be big. :)

Maybe its convinient, but Im not too fond of locking yet more of my program to a single DRM client.

Would love to muck about with it. But I don't fancy paying a monthly subscription.
it's not like they aren't rich enough as it is

Triple A Studio Games and engines are there as a business its perfectly fair to charge for the game engines.

If Crytek really went for royalt free, it really became a good contender to what Unity3D is and Does; A pitty the engine is windows only in all ways.

P.S.: Are then officialy supporting only autodesk/adobe products, still ?

I think Epic did it right this time. They got the shop and system from Unity, the Shading is up there with Cryengine. And Unreal 4 is simpler to use + get used to than Cryengine.

It probably feels like Crytek should have come up with a convincing solution for their own engine, but this is not it. You don't get much that wasn't already there when CrySDK was still free for all. From what I see (other than Unreal 4) they don't give you full source access, but access to a couple of game models that were coded on top of their engine.

It's a nice engine, don't get me wrong, but this subscription model is by no way up to what Unity and EPIC offer. In my opinion you'd be mad to chose Cryengine over these two, at this time.

From what I have seen from those who have looked at this, this isn't what it seems. It is NOT the full engine that the big licensees use. No world streaming for large open worlds (in fact the map is limited to 4x4km, less than the current free SDK), no source code, very few new features. This is basically the FREE SDK we have had for a long time with a ten dollar subscription fee and DRM attached. And unlike UE4, which you can cancel the subs and continue to use and commercialize with the version you canceled with, CE will be locked if you miss a payment. Basically, for expansive and complex games you still need to contact Crytek and set up a hefty royalty license to get all the features, source code, etc you need. This service basically lets them monetize their hobbyist fans.

The CrySDK on Steam for a fee? *shudder*
Crytek, you've just lost a devoted SDK user.

So it is no longer free? That is outrageous! Do they not realize that people won't even start learning it if they have to pay BEFOREHAND?

I know I agree, I'm slightly put off mucking about with it. I don't have a lot of time to muck about with other things since im working 2 jobs and busy on a mod.
If I bought a month I'd need to get my moneys worth, But I'd probably only use it once or twice a week since it wouldn't be my main focus :(
If it was free it wouldn't matter

And yeah it looks like most sdk's could head this way.
But most development tools have yearly\monthly subscriptions
3d max photoshop etc
And Unreal and Cry engine really seem more like a full tool rather than a editor if you know what I mean

But I disagree with payment.
When was the last time that you ever heard of a Mod running up against a AAA title
It's not like these guys are in dyer financial need ether
And there tools teach they're possible future employs

Microsoft have always made you pay to play online
(They are never in any financial danger)

Sony have just started it. And I believe they're ok financially
(Think they just jumped on the same boat since they saw Microsoft where getting away with it for over a decade)

Aww I don't know the world is going down the toilet anyway

It's a pity that the Cryengine is so limited to AAA style windows game. That might be a neck breaker for them in the long run. I also heard, that it comes with an wwise audio tool that actually requires an extra license, once a certain amount of sample is used. That is also a real shame.
