Welcome to the 8th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the premiere event that celebrates the best creations within the modding and indie gaming scene. Developers have delivered plenty of great gameplay experiences this year, and now it is our turn as gamers to nominate and recognize the best of 2009.
From now until Feb 20th, we shall be sharing a year in review and showcasing the editors' picks of 2009, culminating in the announcement of this year's best mod and game as voted by you. The top mods and games will win the honors of being placed alongside other projects that have gone on to become commercial successes and cement their place in ModDB's hall of fame. And to the winner goes the spoils; ModDB has teamed up with a whole lineup of sponsors that have provided prizes ranging from software to servers to beanbags. Everything to help budding developers excel at their craft.
For the next two weeks, we shall be presenting 2009's best, as picked by you the players, and as picked by us the editors. It has been another great year for mod and indie developers, so please join us in congratulating and thanking these teams for their hard work. Never before have there been so many game-changing releases made available for us to experience and play.

Naruto: Naiteki Kensei offers a unique fast-paced gaming experience based on the hit Japanese anime Naruto. Combining a third-person shooter with an action-based fighter, players go head-to-head against others online casting powerful jutsus, performing evasive, acrobatic, and free-form moves, while utilizing an array of weapons with multiple functions.

Best Indie Game
A Reckless Disregard for Gravity is loosely based on the sport of base-jumping. You gain points by swooping within an eyelash of buildings, scoring extra points by kissing the surface, all while going as fast as you can! You can score extra points giving a thumbs-up to spectators as you fall past them or be a rebel and gain points by flipping them off at just the right moment.

Best Multiplayer Mod
MechWarrior: Living Legends is a total conversion mod for Crysis. MWLL is at its very core a mix between a First Person Shooter and a Simulation. This will be achieved through the use of a mixed arms massively multiplayer gaming experience where the player takes part in a battle using a variety of vehicles and weapons.

Best Singleplayer Mod
The Nameless Mod is set in Forum City, the physical embodiment of Internet forums and bulletin boards. Embracing the style of Deus Ex, Forum City has as much crime and conspiracy which JC Denton must overcome. This would be easy if it weren't for the citizens, who want it no other way.

When Mortewood was chosen by the U.S. Government as the first town in America to receive a test for a cure for Cancer, named Project H.O.P.E, naturally the citizens were overjoyed. What happens if this so called 'blessing' becomes a curse? What happens if the cure evolves into a much more terrifying disease?

Indie Game of the Year
Natural Selection 2 pits elite marine Frontiersmen vs the vicious alien Kharaa. Marines buy weaponry and form persistent squads to find and destroy alien hives. Aliens can choose a wall-running Skulk, pudgy Gorge, flying Lerk, murderous Fade or gigantic Onos that can devour enemies whole.
