Planetary engine that can be used with real elevation data of arbitrary resolution, while being progressively enhanced by fractal algorithms. The fractal algorithms refine and introduce details down to centimeter resolution and can be parametrized by elevation and land class data. A completely random fractal terrain is possible too, or a terrain can be sketched in rough resolution with fractal generating the details. Level of detail ranges from thousands of kilometers down to centimeters, with full visibility. The engine is fully asynchronous, majority of the algorithms running on the GPU while the rest is distributed to multiple CPU cores.

great job. I do wonder how you'll keep gameplay focused, but i imagine you'll have some interesting way to deal with that.

Considering Outerra is an engine, not a game, they can be totally uninterested ;).

This is the engine that should be being used for elite 4!
I remember being blown away by elite frontier and the way you could fly through space and then land on a planets surface and this seems like the perfect engine for the job.. we can dream right? ;)

I would love to see a war game on this engine. Maybe a battlefield title. Or this could be the engine that replaces Arma's engine. Either way good job guys.

I can think of 10 games I'd love to see on this engine, but that's conventionally.

Imagine a game built on this engine that streams data from a server cluster, where millions of other users help create and populate the world. With bandwidths of 100 mbps just around the corner, I think something like this would be possible. Whole worlds crafted by users down to the last detail. Even then, and even if every WOW player switched, you'd be hard pressed to find another human on the planet.

Think second life, but with a REAL engine and less 'nice' :P
