In development since 2011 the Frostbite 3 engine was officially debuted along-side DICE's Battlefield 4 which was released in late 2013. The Frostbite engine has been morphing along with the Battlefield series over the years and with the release of Battlefield 4, developer DICE gives games one of the most realistic shooter experiences yet.

Upon it's release the game only supported DirectX 11 on PCs. However AMD will shortly be releasing 'Mantle' driver updates which will allow GCN-Arcitecture supported Radeon graphics cards to experience considerable performance increases due to the new ground breaking technology which Battlefield 4 will be the first to officially support.

Frostbite 3 is currently exclusive to EA titles.

"The entire world is alive in Frostbite games, immersing players into deep and dynamic worlds with always changing wind, water, and weather.

For many years, our developers have pursued realistic visuals. We have defined industry-leading visual standards by simulating real-world lighting conditions and depth of field characteristics.  The next step for us has the pursuit of realism beyond static visuals. Dynamic behaviors over time are key to immersion and believable worlds.  In our games, players will notice subtle movements in the world around them driven by changes in weather.  Prepare for the next level of realism, driven by Frostbite technology!"

Hey everyone, I just dumped Frostbite for another, even better engine. Go download CryEngine 3's SDK. It is just as impressive as Frostbite 3, if not even more so. And it is free for non-commercial use.

What is so special about Frostbite, DICE? It has nothing. CryEngine also has destruction, but I don't hear the CryDev team calling us stupid and claiming that we can't use the engine.

Hey DICE want to make your games last up to 10-20 years? give us mod support.

See, that's the problem. They want their games to die quickly so we just gobble up anything else they throw at us.

Dice, I hope you have a darn good reason for betraying us in favor of EA. I guess you do. Money.

PFC Jason, we don't need their mod tools. Go get yourself a free copy of CryEngine 3 SDK. It's just as good as Frostbite 3, and very user-friendly.

Frostbite 3 is designed to take modding out of our hands, even more than its previous versions. No mods means total dependance on the developers for new content. DICE, don't forget that it was a mod, Desert Combat, that drew the attention of gamers to your team. Now you have betrayed us. Shame on you.
