This is the original Source Mod for Dear Esther. Last updated 22/01/2009.
Installation:
Simply download and extract to your sourcemods folder, and be sure to restart Steam for it to show up on your games list!Requirements:
You must have Half Life 2 and Episode 1 installed in order for this mod to work.
Sorry for any inconvienience while it was down. If you have any problems please let me know!
thank you guys awesome work, you show love here :)
and totally free too, good luck with the remake
Yeah, thanks for putting this back up. Good luck with the Commercial release.
No worries guys, sorry I didnt do it sooner, If you have any problems with it just let me know! :) -Rob
The title in the chapter selection dialogue doesn't show up properly (I think it says #DearEsther_Chapter1_Title rather than START GAME).
This can be fixed by changing the name of the mod directory from "Dear Esther" to "DearEsther"
Will this work with Half-Life 2 Deathmatch and the Source 2006 and 2007 SDK? I just got Steam and don't have it HL2 yet so I'm hoping it will work with Deathmatch (with some customisation, of course. but nothing that will ruin the experience, simply change the AppID from HL2's to HL2DM.)
works with Source Base 2006
I put the mod folder within the RAR file into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods. I restarted Steam, meaning I logged off and logged back in, to see if it was there. It was there. But when I clicked "Play", it didn't launch. I checked to see if I had Half Life 2, and both Half Life episodes 1 and 2. I had them installed. So, I don't really see why the mod wouldn't work. Any advice on what to do?
Do you have normal half life 2? Episode one and two are continuations of Half life 2.
Good luck at IndieDb guys! The semen sprayed all over my monitor could not be half as beautiful as this true work of art!
is it recommended to play this old version before the upcoming remake if you've never played it before? can i spoil myself and should i wait because of that?
I am with KEEP_IT_UP!, Should I play this first or the remake? What do you think will be the "true" Dear Esther experience? I know I will play both but, I would like your opinion on the order I play them.
Im going to wait. I heard from others that the graphics were the only weak portion of this mod. To experience it fully, Im going to wait for the Redux.
I'd wait if you can - although the game has evolved, the central spine of the story is the same (of course), and the overall asset quality will be much higher.... Dan
thanks for the reply :)
i gonna wait then.
Thank you for the reply. I don't mind waiting, because I know this game is going to be great!
I haven't (by some strange chance) played it yet so I'm definitely gonna wait for commercial release and skip free version (I'll probably play it after remake). Anyways, thanks for the (re)upload.
...
I wanna play the graphically...less... version first.
That way I can go "Oh **** that's so much better!"
You won't regret it man. It was one of the most immersive and atmospheric mods I've ever had the pleasure to experience. The musical scores and narration are utterly incredible ! In fact, I think I'll play it again myself.
I'm going to play this mod once more, To remind myself exactly why don't mind paying for the remake.
Even if its really short, if its anywhere near as good as i recall the original being, i'm willing to pay a max of $10-$15 for this. I cant speak for everyone, however.
I put this into my source mod it still wont show up DX no fair, can someone please help. Also I did restart steam
read tschumann's comment.
How can it be that some objects (like rocks trees) appear very bright, almost white on my pc? :)
hitting this up now, the game itself looks interesting because i am a guy who loves the RPG role and from the looks of this Story is all OVer this.
maybe i can one day buy the remake after i play the 09' version
It was supposed to be a Pettabyte D : LOOK AT THE GRAPHICS!This is the only game i've ever seen to care about graphics and storyline!Beautiful mod,and why this mod became a standalone game?
Okay, so I see the button for "Report Abuse" but where is the "Report Awesomeness" button? Lol. Great job. Love the mod!!!
