Bethesda has now confirmed that the main modding tool for The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim, the Creation Kit, will be available from January 2012. "PC players will be able to download the same development tools we used at Bethesda Game Studios to create Skyrim", Bethesda confirms. They are currently also working on tutorial videos and a new Wiki to support the modding tool and get the modders going with information.
Bethesda also speaks of an integration of the modding tool with Steam Workshop, which means modders will be able to upload their mods to the Steam service and anyone can then download and update them from there. You will still be able to upload your work to the traditional modding websites, like ModDB.
Read more about this on Bethesda's Blog or on the Official Elder Srolls Forum.
Sweet! I can't wait to see the future Skyrim modding community.
Finally, I can't wait! Does anyone know how I can start editing Skyrim NIF files with blender or something? It's be amazing if Bethesda released some sort of modelling tool!
As of right now, I think something like that would take a really long time.
Progress is good atm. If you want to find out the latest news check out the Niftools forum.
Aww Skyrim still uses .nif? I thought I read somewhere that the new engine (which by the way doesn't feel/look like it's THAT new) would get rid of the .nifs.
It's not new, it's just a modified Gamebryo engine
Yeah that's what I thought, but I've heard and read that they would use a brand new engine. Maybe I just misunderstood.
they said they created a brand new engine. Maybe they did, and based it off the gamebryo engine?
That's exactly what they did.
Bethesda have slowly removed and replaced parts of Gamebryo over the years. Eventually the only part of Gamebryo left was rendering, which for Skyrim they replaced. Unfortunately not all the bits of Gamebryo that was replaced were much better than Gamebryo itself, which is why it feels the same. I would not say they created a brand new engine, just improved upon what they already had.
Actually, it is a brand new engine. The Gamebryo engine itself can look very different, just look Sid Meier Civilization. It used Gamebryo, and it was a strategy game. BGS used their own code to make it like that. They took the parts they liked after they decided to scrap Gamebryo, and built it in to their new engine called the Creation Engine. So they basically built a new version of their Gamebryo in the terms of how it feels. So it's based of it, but not it.
Civ is a bad example though, Civ is old, they didn't apply a completely custom shader (and buggy) system like Bethesda did. Mainly it comes down to how the code and file structure is.. and as has been said, the file structure is almost completely identical. So no.. not a new engine.
Just want to say the COD many know was first on the Id Tech, now it isn't and looks very similar, you can make a game with a different engine look the same, it just comes down to the coding.
Cod is a heavily modified quake 3 engine and will always be so in my eyes, not a bad thing but they could do much more with it than what they've produced in the recent years in comparison to Unreal engine games, Cryengine, or Frostbite two(yes... i went there).
No, it's not a brand new engine, but the way Bethesda worded out their 'new game engine' is that it wasn't made from scratch.
You can take a old bike and fix it up, and sell it to someone saying It's good as new now.
This is why the game is still very very very buggy, because Bethesda didn't just rewind and re-programmed their engine, they also failed to debug it because Bethesda never EVER debug their stuff properly before selling it.
This is why major conflicting bugs occurs, because their engine has bugs, that attempting to program content of the game on it, causes more bugs. You must have a near perfect game engine, before you start working on the game itself, so bugs that occur, may not be from the game engine themselves.
It's like using a scratched CD to burn your game on it, and hope that it doesn't glitch... And then sell it to people.
gmax is like 3dsmax, but a lot more compact and it can't do as much, however if you're just starting modelling i think it's a fine start.
There's a script for Nif files( Moddb.com ) to gmax. problem is gmax is not really supported anymore, but you can still free register it(at turbosquid.com) and get the program here: Moddb.com from there you'll only need the basic gmax (renx is w3d tools for generals modelling)
Note, i'm not advertising anything, i'm just posting it as an option, there are other programs of course, but I don't know about them.
Hell Yeah
Id and EA should do the same for the community
No, Ubisoft should do that :D
It would be awesome to see proper modding tools, proper online gaming support and no-DRM...
Custom AC maps, noooo we would lose all the need to buy ****** *** DLC.

Never figured it'd get so popular.. Mainly because it looks so washed out.
At long last, I say! Well, better get started on planning the new dragon types I'm going to implement!
How much you wanna bet there is going to be someone who is going to make an intercourse mod like they did with oblivion.
