As per Canon: 8 dual light laser turrets protecting the Center Control Spire, 12 dual light laser turrets protecting the bottom of the ship.
Constantly striving for canon accuracy wherever we can, the ships will also have a tractor beam ability as well ;)

I find it hard to believe an Ithorian (A species best known for being pacifists.) would ever put guns on a ship. But if that's canon then that's canon.
this type of ship traveled the galaxy, at least some point pirates are to target and attack it, and remember this is an equivalent to city. So naturally in a lawless galaxy they need protection.
And technically this is cannon to the legends universe (damm Disney)
These are the people who stopped han from shooting down someone who was just shooting at them, because they would refuse to live on a planet where someone was killed.

Laser weapons were also used for the destruction of asteroids. Light lasers packed enough punch to obliterate an asteroid.
They just also happen to be strong versus fighters and corvettes...
