Well, it's now been 3 years since Chapter 1. A lot more has happened since last year, unfortunately not a whole lot has to do with Underhell itself. It has become clear for some time now, that this is going to be a long winded project.
Truth is, I have been busy with other things as well.
I know this news section isn't necessarily meant for other projects, I'm just talking about them to explain what I've been doing, so I'll be brief.
Around September 2015, I was offered a permanent position at New World Interactive as a Producer, the job offer included moving to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and actually working on site, I was still living in Mexico at the time. So I just said yes, and I moved to Amsterdam last November and have been here since.

Since I moved here, we began pre-production on Insurgency : Sandstorm, the follow up to Insurgency, and we also began working on Day of Infamy, which as originally a free mod we worked on for Insurgency, but soon after release, it became clear that it could become so much more. Valve offered their support and approval of the project, and we set off to turn it into an actual game with loads of original content. I've always been a huge fan of WW2 shooters, and it's been my dream for a very long time to actually work on one.
(For those interested, here's dod_charlie a really old, really ugly map I made for DOD:S years ago. It hasn't aged well.)
Moving up
So I went from working as a producer for one game, to now being a Production Director for 3 announced projects, 1 in pre-production, 1 in full production, and one in post-release content production. It may not be clear to everyone how complicated things can get while multi managing these things, especially in an Indie studio, but yeah, I've had my hands full for a while, and I've been loving every second of it.
What does this means for Underhell though ?
Well, it just means that things have been moving even slower. I must say that this learning experience as a Producer in a real game development studio is the best thing that could have happened to me. I'm learning so much every day and I'm blessed to work with an absolutely amazing team composed of many talented people...

I wonder what's gonna happen next...Who knows? Nothing has been decided yet.
These things take time, what I can say at this point though, is that it is highly unlikely that Underhell will continue to be released simply as a Source Engine modification.
Wait...what?
Source Engine is on its way out, it has been for the past few years, and every time I've heard something from Valve about it, they've made it clear that their support and interest for the platform is minimal, which is logical given the fact that Source 2 is on the horizon.
We developed Day of Infamy on Source because we already had a built platform with Insurgency which facilitated the production and made it an obvious choice, and we've managed to build a great game with unique features in a record time.
But when it comes to Underhell, the more time passes, and the more I realize that Source is getting old, and newer engines have enormous possibilities and would open so many doors for an even better game.
I realize that this is probably not the news you hoped to hear, since it means no Chapter 2 for a while still. I also realize some of you may grow tired of waiting, and I know that it can be pretty hard.
But in the long run, this means nothing but good news, and Underhell would be all the better for it.
So I'll see you when I see you. Not too early...not too late.
So, Mikka (the girl on concept art) is another new character that will make an appearance in Chapter 2?

Keep up the good stuff mxthe, sad to hear that you are moving away from source but hey. But have you pitched underhell to NWI? could be interesting to see underhell go from mod to a full fledged game with an entire studio behind it.
Underhell isn't even finished and it's STILL longer than some modern games

I mean if the source engine can make things like underhell then seeing chapter two built in another engine looking completely different would make me cry...anddie...inside
It's a damn shame another project won't be continued on the Source engine, although I wish you and the team the best of luck I'll be moving on myself. Good luck with the game you are working on and good luck with Underhell, you brought me many hours of quality enjoyment!
Good to hear you are doing well, but i have a question, i've been restraining myself from playing Underhell again since i thought it would soon be released on steam as a standalone game and with some modifications. Is that gonna happen soon ?
Chapter 2 dude. And the rest. I would pay for it. Not a AAA price, but still.
Wow, I was just thinking of this yesterday. What a surprise.
Even if it takes twice as long, I'm happy it'll be moving away from Source. It's just too outdated and hard to work with now.
Also I love dod_charlie. There's something really charming about those old blocky Source maps.
Obviously there are better engines than source for atleast the past 2 years, its just odd seeing this move to another engine & seeing it take aslong as it has.
Just be careful. New engines with more possibilities makes many projects lost in possibilities and dabbling with GFX ending up in the end with worse games then on older engines. The age of the engine doesn't count but what comes from it... with that said I'd prefer more projects on older ages seeing the recent GFX ladden crap ^.=.^
There is no reason for it to be sad for the project to leave Source to another engine. Source was made in a time where the only valid free alternative was Unity *shutters*. Now developers have access to such a free alternative that is bleeding edge and AAA quality. Even Unity can't offer that without buying a **** load of assets and plugins just to match quality, let alone the horrendous material system. Dragonlord's forlorn warning is just something that happens to projects with poorly managed from the beginning. Meaning if you're in-capable of restraint, it doesn't matter what engine you use, you're going to mess up.

Chapter 1's wait was quite painful, but it turned out amazing. I can only see great things coming for Underhell in the future. I'm happy to hear that things are going great for you Mxthe, and I hope things continue rising in great opportunities. ^_^

honestly I was kinda hoping to see Underhell progress as a FTP game under new world interactive just as a showcase of what you and the other devs are capable off .... you know when time is available for it like a kind of side project.
basically a kind of tech / gameplay demo you guys made and of course if there are any other devs there at NWI that have their own mods too it would be great if they showcased them as well ... again when time is available for it.
Take all the time you need man!
In my opinion it's always better to take the time to finish developing a game and squish as many bugs as you can find, than to rush it and release a game with loads of game breaking bugs!
Guess i read wrong, but i really can't find anywere in his article that Underhell will move to another engine. He only said that he isn't working on Underhell now, and also will not be doing so for the next few years, (if he will ever start on it again that is.)
So, no chapter 2 for Underhell, not on Source or another engine (UE4), for at least the next few years.
A shame but fully understandeble!!

I know this is a whole year later, but he says he can see how much Source is aging in the context of Underhell. He didn't flat out say "I'm switching to UE4." But he did imply that Source is getting harder to work with.
Hahaha, wow, time flies, indeed a whole year later. And funny thing is, i even remember writing that other comment, lol!
And Source has indeed aged a lot, i haven't played source (mods, games) for at least 8 months or so myself. And just the other day i did again, boy, it looked like HL 1 to me!!!!
Thought about maybe mapping with it again, but after this i decided not to do so anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised to see UH move to a new engine. Personally it'll be for the better!
No matter what engine Underhell ends up being on, I just hope that I can get it and play through it again. Good luck with your future endeavors.
Does it mean you most likely gonna start a project from scratch including remade/ported prologue and chapter 1 or what?
I sure hope you'll finish the Underhell series one day, no matter how long it'll take. I believe it was one of your life goals to finish it, after all. In any case, I'll be always looking forward to playing Chapter 2 with my friend, once it's finally out!
I would love to help remodel Underhell assets for UE4, Remake the level brushwork to models, do you have a plan to get some more people helping out?

Id much rather you took your time and made a Chapter 2 you were excited about, rather than just trotting one out due to pressure you weren't inspired about!

hello im dylan driver im having trouble installing underhell and when i do the same thing as i did with nightmare house it didnt work i put it in my source mods folder and it gave me the failed to start missing exicutable error i wanna play but i dont know how to get it to work please email dylan.w.driver@gmail.com if you can help me
