Thrawn's Revenge is a large-scale mod for Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. It includes the events of the Galactic Civil War after Palpatine's death at Endor, up until the signing of the Pellaeon-Gavrisom treaty. If you own the Steam version of EaW, you will have to complete extra steps to run the mod after installation. Please see the manual for these steps.

The battle in the video went about as I expected with the Venators coming out on top only barely (90% of them were lost) due to their superior fighter numbers and the Republic fighters being generally higher quality compared to standard Imperial models (shields, missiles etc.).

In a direct one on one confrontation the ISD would curbstomp the Venator due to much better armor + shields and a greater number of weapon emplacements.

The ISD is also a heavy capital ship with firepower being its primary focus while the Venator is a medium capital ship/carrier hybrid with focus more on the carrier role.

If I had to make a rough estimate I'd say when not counting the fighters you'll need 3 Venators to defeat one ISD.

so using a standart rebel tactic and spamming the shields, engine and hangar with fighters will work best right?

completely agree but with fighter support and maneuvering the Venator wins easily one on one, even more so if it isn't carrying old republic fighters but New Republic ones instead

Of course, that's why I said "not counting the fighters".

Without any fighters present, just the two capital ships, the Venator is screwed if it doesn't opt for a retreat fast enough.
The ISD not only has vastly more secondary weapons (60 medium Turbolasers compared to the Venator's 2 dual medium turbos) it also has Ion Cannons and vastly better shields and armor.

The main battery of the Venator with its 8 heavy dual Turbolaser turrets may be equal to the ISD's main battery in power and damage output, but thanks to its Ion Cannons the ISD can drain the shields of the Venator faster than the Venator can put down those of the ISD.
With the shields down the Venator has mediocre armor compared to the ISD and thus the ISD would ultimately blast it apart.

It's like in the real world if one would sent a World War I battleship against a World War II battleship for an one-on-one duel.

A Venator carrying E-Wings and K-Wings would probably a Nightmare indeed, but in that case one may just use an Endurance-class ship for the same effect.

In FoR and ICW since torpedoes do not bypass shields this tactic isn't as feasible as in other mods like i.e. Republic at War or Battlefront commander, but spoken in general yes, this would be the primary tactic for the side with the Venators.
The fighters need to "soften up"/damage the ISDs before the main engagement and ideally the Venators would try to remain in a fair distance in the beginning to reduce casualties.
Pairing the Venators with Dreadnaughts or Victory I-SDs (which both have better armor) would make the whole battle even more effective from the Republic perspective.

It also shows the complete difference in doctrine between the (Old) Republic and the Empire.

While the Empire relies mainly on overwhelming firepower and massive capital ships the Republic has a quality over quantity approach combined with an emphasis on versatility since while the Republic has overall fewer different classes of ships, most of the Republic units can serve a dual role and in battle they rely on fighter strikes supported by medium-scale capital ships, practically a sort of mix between the doctrine of the Empire and the Rebel Alliance/New Republic which has a total primary focus on high quality and deadly fighters alone.
