The Survival is an episodic Source Engine total conversion mod with an original storyline and unique cast of characters. Play your way through a post-apocalyptic world and immerse yourself into the role of Emmett Gibson, an everyman who must not only protect himself, but a group of other survivors as well from the many unknown threats that await him. The Survival takes advantage of the Source Engine in many ways, both from the gameplay and graphical aspects. Everything from a wide variety of explorable maps to sound effects shapes the treacherous and immersive world of the game.
Greetings everyone!
It has been quite a while since the last time The Survival's MODDB page was updated. Things have gotten quite busy over the past several months, and while progress has been made, the mod is still under wraps and has also undergone a few changes.
For starters, The Survival was originally envisioned as a Half-Life 2 mod, running on the Source SDK 2013 Singleplayer Base. Eventually, a decision to port everything over to the Alien Swarm Engine branch came into mind, and thus after consideration, all of the assets have been moved over to the AS Engine branch. The Survival will still be a single-player mod, only on a different engine branch.
Moving everything over to the Alien Swarm engine branch allows for multicore rendering, faster rendering of models & particles, as well as advanced water shaders and deferred lighting. VPK support would also allow to keep files (maps, textures, sounds, models, etc.) in a more organized way.
Because of this, a copy of Alien Swarm will be the only thing you will need in order to play The Survival. Fret not, for AS is free to download on the Steam store!
One last thing, the mod is NOT DEAD. It is very much still alive and being worked on daily. Be sure to check back for more updates in the foreseeable future.

Interested on how you are going to accomplish an open world in source engine really isn't an ideal engine for Open World games.
This is true, Source isn't known for huge maps like Skyrim or GTA, but its maps will be explorable. You as the player are headed towards your current destination; don't just walk in a straight path, look around a little bit. Maybe that old building has a clue or potential plot detail.
Hey SuperNexus, if there is a young man, (13-15) in there, I could possibly do it :D
The mapping looks good, tracking.
What BadXFox said.
Sounds good, tracking
Can this be a road trip mod? I like road trips.
Well, there will be a lot of open-world exploration. :)
Yes! Oh, I can't help but wonder, will it take place in the 90s or 80s?
1990s.
Finally!
You of all people get what we want!
GTA styled gameplay thanks bro!
