Why remove a well-designed (by Weta no less) Azog and replace him with this...low fantasy pirate-wannabe. I love most of your design, but he looks like a bad joke, and this isn't the 1st of April

Because... we did not think Azog was well-designed, or interesting, regardless of who designed him.

We like this guy though. And Bolg. If you don't, well, tough.

Sorry to say, but your Bolg, the Mountain-orcs and this guy are pretty generic compared to the Weta designs. You're trying to advocate the idea that your designs are superior, but they're not. It's a shame because the quality of your models are great.

We're not advocating any sort of objective superiority. We're advocating our personal preferences, which we... prefer. If you don't like it, you are free to not download the next version.

lol my friend, you would be 0 without the playerbase that plays your mod.. stop being so superior and arrogant, we understand you're the mod creators but maybe make some polls and ask the community what they feel and like about some future decisions..

Reply Good karma Bad karma-1 votes

No, Age of the Ring would be 0 if we didn't follow our own instincts and ideas to create it.

We're grateful that people enjoy it, but to think we owe the playerbase anything is a mistake. Subjecting a creative endeavour to 'democracy' by polling people's opinions only muddles its direction and dulls all creative identity.

If AotR is no longer to your liking now that we have removed Azog and implemented Bolg and Lug the Mauled to replace him, then you are very free to just not play it. We won't mind, I promise. But you'll be missing out.

No dude, don't twist my words because I never said anything about objective superiority. In the end this a subjective matter, but you can look through your comments in various preview images and clearly see that you hate the Hobbit designs. This is fine, but you're also trying to convince others that they're bad, that's the advocating part that I am referring to. If not on Moddb then just go through your discord, whenever someone is bringing up their interest for the Hobbit films or its designs you instantly try to trash the whole thing. And when I say "you" I mean not just you, Mathijs, in particular, but your teammembers in general. Great mod and quality, but you got quite a toxic ship running there.

When people dislike something and explain why (and act accordingly within their own creative projects), this is not toxicity. Are you sure your own fandom isn't toxic to the point where you can't deal with anyone not liking what you like?

Learn to accept that people have opinions that you might not share. The fact that you seem to be *accusing* the AotR team of disliking designs from The Hobbit (as well as the films themselves, for the most part) as if this were some fault in our character, is preposterous. Yes, there's times in our Discord community when people have debates about The Hobbit. If you can't deal with negative opinions over something you like, just don't read these debates, or just leave the server.

All we did is implement stuff we wanted to see in our own project, at the cost of 1 character from a film franchise we don't particularly enjoy. We like Misty Mountains better now, and I bet a lot of other people will like what we did also. If you don't, that's too bad. Calm down.

Reply Good karma+11 votes

FrodosFather - - 32 comments

Yeah not much of a debate is it. You literally have a command in your server that spawns a dumb youtube review with the title that the Hobbit sucks, how can you call that expressing your opinion? And then there is this constant trash talking from the goons in your team whenever the subject is brought up. Just so you know, I could redirect what you said about learning to accept that people have different opinions right back at you, because you guys are not the white knights you'd like to portray yourself to be.

It is per se a nice unit, the only thing which totally sticks out and which ruins it is the wooden leg. It does not fit at all in my opinion.
There are crippled Orcs, yes, Gothmog in the film is the best example, but he is rarely shown as fighter and rather as commander, a good one at his job who can balance out his physical incapability. And now you have this quasi-mercenary unit which is supposed to be a fighter. A wooden leg is hard enough to walk with at normal terrain in normal situations, I don't even need to mention the situation in battle at varying terrain.
Beside the practicability, I think it would also go against the lore. It would mean that Orcs cared for each other, that some Orc (or multiple Orcs) carried him away from a battlefield at which he got wounded and took care for him. And that is just a very untypical behaviour for Orcs.
That wooden leg, it contradicts lore and practicability and is in my opinion one of the worst design decissions you have made yet.
As said, the remaining design looks nice and fits well into your Misty Mountain faction from what I have seen so far. In the end it's solely up to you developers to decide with what they go,the mod is after all your own creative work :)

A wooden leg contradicts lore? Did Tolkien say orcs were unable to lose limbs and survive? That Sauron banned prosthetics? Lug lost his leg to a grumpy Warg and patched himself up. He's fine. A little tongue in cheek, but fine. Not everyone needs to like old Lug, but he really doesn't contradict any lore.

I explained my lore reasons above (the take-care-of-someone part in case you missed it), no need to pull strawman arguments here. If you say he lost his leg to a grumpy Warg and patched himself up, that's fine for me. Not really plausible, but as pointed out, it's your own vision of the lore.

Well, you did make quite the assumption on how he might've lost his leg. I also would not agree that orcs 'caring for each other' (ie. practicing medicine) contradicts anything in Tolkien's lore. I can't recall any passage or description that states orcs would never attempt to heal the wounds of other orcs.

People are too quick to say that something they dislike or find odd or surprising contradicts 'lore' to back up their opinion. It might not fit your personal view of orcs, but I can't think of anything that actually contradicts this, while there's plenty of things that support it: orcs lived in social groups, displayed a sense of pride pertaining to their group and race, were known to go great lengths to avenge their fallen captains, and, most importantly, carried around orcish medicine.

There are not many situations at which one can lose a leg, a battle seemed to be the most obvious option, given that you also did not really give more informations here about the character's background story before.
There is also a difference between carrying around medicine for wounded Orcs and trying to heal a crippled Orc. And I don't find anything which would support the view of that Orcs would take such deep care. But that's as you said my personal view of Orcs, as it is yours that something like that would be done.
I also did not use lore as my only reason for why I dislike the wooden leg "to backup my opinion", lore is however the only thing on which you concentrated at your responses.

Of course I only responded to the lore argument - that's the one that approached some sense of objectivity. The rest is just personal taste, which I'm fine with.

Yeah - imagine if in the films, Azog was dragged away from a battle after losing an arm or something, only to reappear later on with a crude prosthetic instead. That would be NUTS!

Oh wait... =P

In canon, we have Ugluk treating the wounded Merry in Orc fashion. That gives us the idea that not only Orcs practice medicine in their own form, they no doubt probably treated wounded comrades.

Orcs may often be depicted as savages and would kill each other for the slightest provocation, but in combat or desperate situations, Orcs at least acted like any other army, including having basic medical training and knowledge.
