The 2005 original is available once again, rebuilt and expanded in an all-new 10th Anniversary Edition, thanks to the support of our community, and the crews of System Shock Infinite and SMOD Standalone.

This mod harks back to a bygone age, when innovation with first person shooters was king.
Games like Thief, Requiem or Shogo would explore new approaches to the shooter genre.
Substance sought to merge the different playstyles into a precursor to the Crysis suit.

Each of the HEV Suit Modes comes with its own weapons and abilities, like energy shields or cloaking.
Just like multiplayer classes, which can be switched on-the-fly and share one gigantic inventory.

Newly available in this version, is the VR Missions map pack. As Substance used to be limited to the
vanilla and remastered campaigns, it can now be played in over a hundred Half-Life 2 classic mods
such as Strider Mountain, The Citizen, Rock 24, Riot Act and Mistake of Pythagoras!

The Substance Campaign
Set in an alternate continuity where humanity never surrendered in the 7 Hours War, this modified
campaign is a retelling of Gordon Freeman's iconic arrival to City 17. It is a time of desperate
struggle, where the Human and the Vortigaunts have joined forces against the Combine invader.
Every level of Half-Life 2 now features new intense encounters, like antlion swarm invading the
city perimeter as in Episode 1, or the Combine attacking the Ravenholm survivors.

The Substance Vanilla Campaign
In the Substance Vanilla campaign, the original campaign features all the new gameplay from Substance
(like suit modes, slow motion, extra weapons and dynamic healing) but lacks the extra encounters.

The VR MISSIONS Map Pack
In the VR Missions addon, Gordon tests his augmented HEV suit within community-made levels by
artists like Leon Brinkmann, Baltic.Forever, Jose M. Ameyugo, Koumei satou, Henley Bailey,
Richard Acherki, Chris Fox, Germano Guerrini, Bobby Cardona, Tylak and Viktor Lundberg.

DEFENSE MODE
Enhances balance and armor, focusing on medium-range combat.
[Shield] Hold shift to summon a shield, effective against physical attacks.
[Engineering] Ability to craft explosives, drones and sentry guns.

ASSAULT MODE
Enhances strength and firepower, focusing on slow-motion combat.
[Quad Damage] Hold shift to greatly increase weapon damage, inflicted and taken.
[Overload] Press F to enter a state of rage and bolster your unarmed strikes.

STEALTH MODE
Enhances dexterity and evasion, focusing on short-range combat.
[Cloak] Hold shift to become invisible. Taking damage depletes the aux charge.
[EMP Charge] Press F to release a powerful blast. Scrambles enemy targeting.

RECON MODE
Enhances survey and endurance, focusing on long-range combat.
[Morphine] Press shift to heal yourself. You are dazed until the effect expires.
[Mimetism] Stay still in crouch position to become invisible. Lasts indefinitely.

RIPPER MODE
Enhances agility and critical damage, focusing on fast-paced combat.
[Fox Hound] Hold shift to become invisible. Health depletes if you can be seen.
[Long Jump] Press control and space to perform a long leap forward.

- USP Pistol: medium damage, medium rate of fire. Increased accuracy.
- MP5: low damage, high rate of fire. Secondary fire shoots a grenade.
- Spas-12 Shotgun: medium damage, slow rate of fire. Secondary fire delivers a stronger attack.
- I-Rifle: instant kill, low rate of fire. Secondary fire shoots a more durable energy ball.
- Auto-Shotgun: high damage, high rate of fire. Secondary fire summons a friendly turret.
- RPG: secondary fire disables the homing effect. Missile speed can be customized.
- Bugbait (summon): alternate firemode summons an antlion. Antlions can be summoned into any level.
- Sticky Grenade: will stick to enemies and explode. Secondary fire rolls the grenade on the ground.
- Proximity Mine (energy): causes energy explosions, harmless to Gordon. Kill headcrabs to replenish ammo.
- Armed Airboat: secondary fire shoots a rocket.

ASSAULT MODE
- Unarmed Strikes: high damage, fast attack speed. Used in the Overload suit ability.
- Tazer: low damage, fast attack speed. Secondary fire delivers a stronger attack.
- Gravity Gun (overcharge): zaps any target at close range. Overcharges when ammo is low.
- Dual Elites: high damage, low rate of fire. Each pull of the trigger shoots twice.
- AK-47: medium damage, high rate of fire. Reduced reloading time.
- Sawed-off: can be loaded with 1, 2 or 4 shells at a time for higher damage. Very low rate of fire.
- HK-23E rifle: high damage, medium rate of fire. Reduced reloading time.
- Vulcan minigun: high damage, high rate of fire. Increased reloading time.
- RPG: secondary fire disables the homing effect. Missile speed can be customized.
- Bugbait: stuns humanoid targets. No summoning abilities.
- Cluster Grenade: instant kill, ony works on humanoids. Causes wide incendiary AOE damage.

STEALTH MODE
- EMP: high damage AOE, long cooldown. Used in the EMP Charge suit ability.
- Combat Knife: high damage, fast attack speed. Secondary fire delivers a stronger attack.
- Gravity Gloves: instant kill, snaps an enemy's neck. Very low range.
- Silenced Beretta: high damage, medium rate of fire. Increased accuracy.
- Silenced Famas: high damage, high rate of fire, reduced clip. Secondary fire shoots a small grenade.
- Crossbow: high damage, low rate of fire. Alternate firemodes: normal, electrical, explosive.
- RPG: secondary fire disables the homing effect. Missile speed can be customized.
- Bugbait: stuns humanoid targets. No summoning abilities.
- SLAM Mine: can be planted as laser tripwires on walls, or placed as satchel charges.
- CHAFF Grenade: releases an harmless explosion which confuses enemies. Useful to ghost through.

RECON MODE
- CQC Knife: high damage, low attack speed. Secondary fire delivers a stronger attack.
- Gravity Gun (overcharge): zaps any target at close range. Overcharges when ammo is low.
- Scoped Desert Eagle: high damage, medium rate of fire. Secondary fire zooms in.
- Flare Gun: instant kill, only works on humanoids. Secondary fire releases an AOE shot.
- Carbine: medium damage, high rate of fire. Secondary fire zooms in.
- Scoped Auto-Shotgun: high damage, medium rate of fire. Secondary fire zooms in.
- FN2000: high damage, high rate of fire. Reduced clip. Secondary fire zooms in.
- AWP Sniper Rifle: instant kill, low rate of fire. Secondary fire zoom in, has embedded slow-mo.
- RPG: secondary fire disables the homing effect. Missile speed can be customized.
- Bugbait: stuns humanoid targets. No summoning abilities.
- Proximity Mine (explosive): causes AOE explosions. Kill headcrabs to replenish ammo.

RIPPER MODE
- High-Frequency Blade: instant kill, fast attack speed. Increased range.
- Super Gravity Gun: instant kill attack, but requires energy. The super effect is always on.
- SNS Pistol: high damage, very low rate of fire. Bonus to headshots.
- Sawed-off: high damage, medium rate of fire. Increased spread.
- I-Rifle: instant kill, low rate of fire. Secondary fire shoots a more durable energy ball.
- XM-8 Rifle: high damage, high rate of fire. Reduced accuracy.
- AUG Sniper Rifle: high damage, medium rate of fire. Secondary fire zooms in.
- RPG: secondary fire disables the homing effect. Missile speed can be customized.
- Bugbait (summon): alternate firemode summons an antlion. Antlions can be summoned into any level.

Installer Version
Extract the "Half-Life 2_Substance_installer_v21.7z" file in Sourcemods.
Run the "SMODStandaloneInstaller.exe" executable with admin rights and setup the game.

Archive Version
Extract the "Half-Life 2_Substance_archive_v21.7z" file in Sourcemods.
Move the "hl2.exe" file to SteamApps\Common\SourceSDKBase.

HL2 and Source SDK 2006 must be installed (and launched at least once) before installing.
The SMOD Standalone Installer must be unzipped and run from within the Sourcemods folder.

- Some levels suffer from a fog effect due to OpenGL rendering, i.e. Kleiner's lab.
- Large objects like trains and Pythagoras blocks may cause stuttering for about a minute.
- A player may become slowed down: switch to any suit mode (even your current one) to fix.
- If you drive in Stealth\Recon\Ripper mode, loading savegames or levels will show your weapon.
- If you get the "AI Disabled" message, press K.
- If you get stuck, click on the Restart button.
