Star Wars: Interregnum is an upcoming mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion that builds off of the highly successful Enhanced 4X Mod. Fleeing the unknown terror that is chasing the Vasari, the factions of Sins of a Solar Empire stumble on a temporary wormhole that takes them to a galaxy far, far away. The sudden arrival of armadas with trillions of refugees and thousands of warships between the events of Episodes 5 & 6 forever alters the Star Wars universe and plunges the galaxy into an unprecedented period of chaos and violence. Begun, a new conflict has.
One of the many features the Enhanced 4X Mod introduced was planetary weapons that could operate independently from other ships and structures. It would thus be a tremendous waste to not give the Alliance their famous ion cannon, capable of turning even the mighty Imperial Star Destroyer into a helpless lot of metal floating dead in space.
While the ion cannon cannot destroy enemy ships like the TEC's planetary weapons, its specialized role allows it to greatly hinder enemy capitalships operating in its range. Since capitalships are often the units bombing your planets, the defensive utility should be obvious. And if your enemy decides to send a single enemy capitalship to attack you... well, it will be hard pressed to do much of anything besides retreat.
After being researched, ion cannons can be built on any of your planets with a Galofree Colony frigate, for a modest cost. A few minutes after construction, they'll be online and will display an overhead particle effect to let you know it is active.
If you're wondering why this screenshot was included, this Star Destroyer is actually perpendicular to the planet's equator, thanks to the drifting it did after being hit by the Ion Cannon. Hence why its all dark, since its underside is facing the sun.
Will the ion cannons flat-out disable any ship? Or just capital ships? And will they be able to affect Titans as well?
Just capitalships. Planetary weapons are on auto fire, so having them attack any ship would mean they'd probably always hit some minor frigate that doesn't matter when an enemy fleet attacks. And having them disable titans I thought was too powerful. I don't think there's any ability in the game that totally shuts down titans.
There are a few that disable their abilities.
Yes, but the ion cannon disables everything. Movement, abilities weapons etc. That is what I meant by "Totally shuts down".
This is so cool! Cant wait to play the Rebels, and they seem to get sharper teeth every day :3
Just when I thought I couldn't get any more pumped up about the next release, you throw out a bombshell like this! Now I'm REALLY excited about playing as the Rebels!
are you planning to add more lore in the near future?
Yes. There will be one more timeline before the Rebels are released. Hopefully... assuming I don't need to choose between writing it and doing taxes on that weekend. :p
Does it get stronger over time like the TEC cannons do? It's fine either way.
Nope. Just to be clear the TEC just get more, different types of weapons as time goes on; the missiles for example don't get any better from the moment they come online. Gauss shells and nukes just get added to the mix. :p
Is the Ion Cannon always a one shot disable, even with shields up? Or will it be like the SPHA-T where it's only fully effective if you knock out the enemy's shields, or use it when their shields are already down? If I remember correctly, the Ion cannon used by the Rebels on Hoth was able to disable that ISD-II instantly because it had it's deflector shields lowered.
