Description

The Klingon Civil War of 2368 was a short but savage conflict fought between factions of the Klingon Empire loyal to the newly appointed Chancellor Gowron, and those aligned with the powerful House of Duras.

The setting was laid by the death of Chancellor K'mpec in 2367. An honourable leader, K'mpec had kept the Empire unified for decades. His death, however, left a power vacuum, and by Klingon tradition two rose to succeed him - Gowron and Duras. While Duras was killed after having been revealed to have been behind K'mpec's death, his family remained powerful and Gowron was short of influential allies. When the family of Duras presented Toral, young son of Duras, as a potential contender for leadership, the high Council was forced by Klingon law to consider him a legitimate rival despite his young age. When the Council eventually decreed that Gowron, an accomplished warrior and politician, would become Chancellor, the House of Duras gathered its allies and attacked, plunging the Empire into civil war.

Though the House of Duras had greater numbers, Gowron had the loyalty of superior commanders. The war was fought with vicious determination from both sides. Despite suffering heavy losses in ships and supplies however, the Duras forces continued to fight effectively, raising suspicions that they were receiving outside assistance.

Fearing Romulan collusion with the Duras and a potential shift in the balance of power, a Federation fleet was assembled to blockade the Romulan-Klingon Border. This blockade eventually revealed that the Romulans were, in fact, supplying the Duras in an attempt to break the alliance between the Klingons and the Federation.

With their corruption revealed, support quickly fell away from the House of Duras until only the members of the Duras family remained. Shamed and under threat of a dishonourable execution they fled Qo'nos, leaving Gowron to take his rightful place as leader of the Klingon Empire - a leader indebted to the Federation.
