Lets all stop and remember, the Borg had a transwarp conduit exit right outside Earth's parameter (remember the end of Voyager?) They could've wiped them all out at any moment. That battle was more of a minor skirmish compared to what the Borg were really capable of. If she really wanted to, the queen would've sent a couple dozen cubes, and they'd have zero power to defend against them.

One cube decimated the fleet at Wolf 359, and still kept on trucking. One cube went against Earth's defense fleet, and wasn't doing too bad, till Picard used the strategy guide and cheated. I really hate it when writers decide main villains need to be cocky. The war torn Federation had no chance against the nearly infinite resources of the Borg. Lets face it, most races don't have much chance if the Borg decided to be 100% aggressive.

There is no such thing as infinite resources.
There are different enemies in Delta and Gamma quadrants..
There are different matters in Delta and Gamma quadrants.
There is possibility that Federation and Alpha quadrant races can develop valuable technology to be assimilated later.

And remembering ST games, Borg tried to invade Federation. To their own demise.

Also, you should consider that all alpha and beta quadrants races will unite to fight the Borg. And knowing Borg nature, they will do it much faster than in case with promising Dominion.

So, there are reasons why Federation still stands.

I said /nearly/ infinite resources. A race that can literally re-assemble atomic structure into anything it wants on a whim, basically has access to infinite resources. The Borg have existed in its current state since the 1400's, maybe only a handful of systems, but we all know how quickly they expand. Present day, they have assimilated thousands of disposable worlds. You do the math.

Video Game depictions of the Borg are stupid. All technology in the video games are based on Voyagers encounter. So of course any plot is gonna take place AFTER that point in time, so they can ******** their way into saying, well we have the technology now, so eat it Borg. The Borg just become another needless antagonist race for the Federation to deal with. In STO, it was just stupid as well, mostly because they threw EVERY ANTAGONIST FACTION THAT EVER EXISTED. The inclusion of the Borg just made it more of a convoluted mess and less menacing as a result.

Like I said, if the Borg were 100% aggressive instead of being passive? No one stands a chance. The Borg would out number and out power any opposition. If not out power, than certainly out number.

There are two reasons why the Federation still stands: Pure dumb luck, and the Enterprise (or any show related ship) is always in range at any given time.

Too loud words. They're just mortals. As far as they unable to breed clone drones and print cubes for them, they 're just another faction. 8472, Unimatrix Zero... Queen seemed very troubled. And let's not forget about Dominion with their "near infinite resources". And Borg numbers is not that big advantage as you think, because of their low quality. Borg has very powerful scientific capabilities, though.

Borg represents a great threat to entire Milky way galaxy, but there is nothing supernatural. Dominion appears to be more frightening force...

8472 was one of the few races that could stand up to the Borg. And defeated them, if Janeway hadn't intervened. At the cost of the rest of the galaxy. The virus weapon that they had to fight 8472 only existed on Voyager. They'd eventually be destroyed anyway and 8472 purges the galaxy. Unimatrix Zero was the result of a mutagenic virus that the Borg had assimilated down the line. I'd suspect a highly powerful telepathic race, for such a thing to exist deep in the subconscious. But thats not necessarily a Borg weakness, cause how could they have known unless they assimilate? I guess that is the main weakness of the Borg. They just assimilate first, and ask questions later lol. So you could make them assimilate nearly anything.

A sustained fight on equal grounds between the Borg and the Dominion would be very interesting. If it was a TV series or Movie, I would bet the war would be a stalemate for the most part, with the Dominion coming out on top with some clever strategy. The Founders were pretty cunning after all.

My guess is based upon how the borg behave in star trek fleet commmand 3.
You see in star trek fleet command 3, the borg cube AI doesn't bother to check for asteroids and will warp towards the nearest target even if it means hitting a fatal asteroid.
Therefore the queen probably sent hundreds of cubes its just that there was one too many asteroids in the way.

Always erked me, in voyager the borg are seen using entire fleets of cubes to assimilate worlds. Yet when going up against the feds, they send only.... one cube? With the exit point in side of earth, the borg would have no trouble at all sending a fleet of cubes and shoving the fed ships to the side like bugs to a fly swatter.

The Borg ever only needed one cube against the Federation. Look how much devastation one cube caused at Wolf 359. If Data wasn't successful, Earth would be gone. The Battle of Sector 001 basically decimated most of the Federation defense fleet. The only way the Federation won was cause Picard was still in contact with them cause of the implants they couldn't remove, so he knew where to strike. Also the Borg Queen planned for this, hence the Borg Sphere. Battle of Sector 001 was literally just a diversion tactic for the Borg.

My guess as to why they didn't just take care of Earth sooner, is cause the Queen had a different agenda with them. Before Janeway, she didn't think they were that much of a threat. Else they'd be wiped out pretty quick.

Wasn't the transwarp network destroyed or heavy damaged at the end of voyager?

It was assumed so, but the point remains that it was there initially. And They could've used it at any time, but didn't. And thats the scariest part.

Description

In 2373 a second Borg incursion into Federation space was met by a much stronger Federation fleet at the Typhon Sector. The Borg Cube, however, did not stop to engage the fleet and after an initial exchange of fire that left heavy damage on both sides, a lengthy running battle ensued all the way to Sector 001 until the Borg Cube was well within sight of Earth.

There, Starfleet prepared its last line of defence. The remnants of the Typhon fleet, reinforced by Earth's defences and all Federation ships in the area able to fight, made one final push against the Borg onslaught, utilising every lesson learned from the massacre at Wolf 359 in a desperate struggle to halt the Cube's advance. Every new weapon was brought to bear and every new tactic employed.

Their success was impressive. Though nearing complete exhaustion and suffering great losses, Starfleet managed to inflict heavy damage to the structure of the Borg Cube. It was, however, to no avail. With estimates indicating that a Bog Cube could continue operating efficiently even if up to 78% of the entire vessel was disabled, Starfleet's efforts simply weren't enough and the Borg continued their assault.

It was only through the timely arrival of the USS Enterprise-E and the knowledge of the Borg retained by Captain Jean-Luc Picard that hope was finally rekindled. Hearing echoes of the Borg's collective consciousness in his mind, Picard was able to determine that the Borg were directing the bulk of their repair efforts to a specific section of the Cube. They were vulnerable. Taking command of the fleet, Picard ordered the fleet to focus its fire on that section of the Cube. After several volleys the Borg suffered catastrophic damage, leading to the Cube's complete destruction.

Victory was theirs and Earth was safe. The fleet's captains, however, were surprised when the Enterprise, instead of regrouping, headed rapidly towards Earth, only to return moments later along with a surge of odd chronometric readings...
