Description

Greek and Roman troop types were named after their equipment, with perhaps the best-known example being the hoplite and his hoplon shield. The eastern Romans referred to shields as skouton, and thus their mainline infantry were the skoutatoi ("shield-bearers"). Trained and equipped to a very high standard at the state's expense, they were one of the few truly professional forces seen in Europe before the 15th century.

The top picture shows the default appearance of the skoutatoi at the start of the campaign. The middle is their 14th century appearance, with heavier armour to represent the reunification (for the most part) of the Roman Empire. Lastly is their 15th century appearance, with western European (and Turkish) influences becoming more apparent.
