The Romans referred to western Europeans as Latins, as they were of the Roman Catholic faith and used Latin as a scholarly language. It was common for Latins, particularly Italian merchants, to permanently settle in eastern Roman cities. The term gasmouloi referred to children of mixed Latin and Greek descent. They typically served as marines in the Roman navy, using a mix of Roman and western European equipment. This would have included the arquebus, in limited numbers; historically, the Roman Empire fell just a few decades after its invention.
