Roman paramonai (13th century) image - One Ruler on Earth: Total War mod for Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms

The paramonai were a Roman imperial guard unit formed during the Palaiologan dynasty, sometime after the recapture of Constantinople (1272 at the latest). Each member was a native Greek soldier armed with a sword, and there was one regiment of cavalry as well as another of infantry. While the Varangians still existed when Constantinople fell in 1453, the status of the paramonai at this time is unknown. In-game, they are an elite heavy infantry unit and one of the few swordsmen units that can form a shield wall.
