Description:

*************************************************************

Ninja Tournament is a sword fighting simulation for the doom3
engine. Player movement is controlled by the keyboard and the
swordposition is directly controlled by mouse movements.

As with any sword, the quality of the weapon is the most
important factor (just remember what a Hatori Hanzo sword can
do...), so, you should take proper care to select your weapon
(i.e. the mouse), as bad weapons either don't have a good
grip, or don't react very well to quick swings...

Also, if you want to excel at swordfighting, you should learn
to maximize your skill: a good swing with the katana involves
speed, acuracy and the proper movement direction.

In the singleplayer game, two challenges are included and
some original Doom3 maps are available. In the challenges you
need to fight against a series of monsters that spawn into
the tournament. The single player game plays similar to
standard Doom3. Note that the original Doom3 maps were
extensively but not fully tested - please report any bugs to:
leif@gravity-music.net.

The multiplayer game includes two original and the 5 standard
Doom3 multiplayer maps.

Ninja Tournament is a swordfighting mod for the Doom3 engine. The controls were fully reworked for this new release: Player movement is controlled in the same way as in the original Doom3 game, however, if you hold down the right mouse button, mouse movements are directly converted into sword movements. Faster swings deliver more damage and a sword held at an upright position can block incoming fromtal attacks. The mod includes single player original Doom3 levels and novel ninja challenges. Swordfighting is also available in multiplayer. The new version is available for download here: FileFront

I tried to play this, but it came up with a error saying 'wrong version API dll'. I have updated doom 3 to 1.3.1, so what can be the problem?

Thanks. :D

You could increase the mouse sensitivity, then you might not need to use the whole desk. However, when I was doing my hardcore game testing sessions in "The Pit", I shook my little computer desk so wildly, that I dumped all the stuff on it on the ground! Also, as I mentioned in the readme, some mice are better suited for the sowrd control than others. A good, fast gamer mouse is probably most useful.

I like the idea of this mod, but one thing I didn't like when I actually played it. The sword control scheme is a bit odd. The best attacks I did required me to use my mouse in a way that requires my entire desk space, and I have to constantly keep it holding my sword up just so I can do a simple ' / ' slash motion like that. Very tricky! Other then that its great, so try to make sword motions easier. But I love it still, and I will continue you practice. See ya for now :D (Goes to try the pit again)

Crispy: I think that individual writen opinions are more useful than votes. The comments on this page relate to the earlier version 1.0 and this current version includes some significant improvements. I also think that it is worth to have doom3 installed, because there are other interesting mods out there.

So I'm guessing that 6.5/10 may not be very representative. Can some more people share their opinions on this? We all know there're people edging to reinstall Doom III to play some of the more recent mods for it...

It works for me - just tested again. I heard reports about problems before, but in my experience it worked 99% of the times I tired.

I played around with some alternative controls. The next version will use the keyboard for pure forward/backwards and sideways strafing and mouse movements for turning unless button 1 is pressed down. If this button is pressed down, mouse movements are transfered to sword movements. I also added a blocking feature that can block frontal damage, if the sword is held at a specific upright position. Movement modifiers (more damage if you add your body weight into the slash by jumping at your enemies!) are also in, though these do not currently take into acount, if you move towards the enemy or away from the enemy - anyways, if you move away from the enemy you will not make significant damage anyways, so it does not really matter.

The next version will also offer the possibility to play the vanilla doom3 maps with the ninja. THis feature will not be really perfect and there might be some dead ends along the way. Also, the Doom3 maps were not made with thirdperson view in mind. Although I added a dynamic camera, it is difficult to avoid camera clipping with the level, which then in turn slows down the engine quite a bit.

Any suggestions are welcome!
