Crashing on startup/new game:

1. Open the mod with 7zip

2. Extract the mod under Program Files or somewhere you will remember. NOT over your Call of Priptay game!

3. Download the 1.4.10 patch here Moddb.com and extract the patch with 7zip, drag and drop its contents over the Call of Chernobyl mod, overwrite when asked. (When a new patch is released just use that instead :D)

4. Start up game, go to options click on Video tab, look at bottom right and click on advanced, lower both grass density and grass distance all the way. Raise this very slightly as it WILL eventually cause you to crash. I have a 980 ti and keep both options at about 25% for stability. Rarely do I crash now after a week of playing religiously :)

Crashing when entering a different location:

1. Right click on Call of Chernobyl shortcut, click on properties, click on shortcut tab, look for target line, so now add -noprefetch at the very end of the line. So for Target it should now be something like this "D:\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Chernobyl\Stalker-CoC.exe" -noprefetch (yours may look different depending on where you placed the mod. That is ok, don't worry about it, and do not copy paste my target, just add -noprefetch at the end of YOUR target line)

2. If still crashing when entering new location again lower your grass settings.

Random Crashing

1. Click on Options, game tab, and disable Autosaving. (I never loaded an autosave, useless imo)

2. Try not to rely on Quicksaving/Quickloading or Last Save for loading your game. Save/Load manually. I never experienced game breaking bugs when Quicksaving/Quickloading, but crashes do randomly occur while Quicksaving. So, if you crash while Quicksaving/Quickloading I would say your game is "stable", but that specific feature is not.

Addons:

1. Be smart. You obviously CAN NOT use all weapon packs. I prefer Aresenal Overhaul with Outfit addon as standard.

2. Don't confuse 1.4 for 1.4.10 or 1.4.11. A mod that works for 1.4 might not work for 1.4.10.

3. Some mods won't work unless you start a new game!

4. Read the comments for the addon. Creators most likely already answered number 2 and 3.

That's all I have to say for now. I will edit this if possible in the future as I plan on playing this mod for a good amount. I plan on making a map so people can see what/who they can find at a certain location. I also plan on making a guide for the story mode at a certain point as some missions are too vague for anyone to figure out.

Get out of here Stalker!

Great guide! I'd add these hints:

  • Never ever use quicksaves, always hard save your game.

  • Never ever use quickloads.

  • Never ever load autosaves.

  • Never ever use "Last save" for loading.

Hope this helps. In my experience, this makes savegames and overall experience much more stable.

Good hunting stalker!

@sergiopappalardo78

I always use quicksave/quickloads and Last Save. I will admit sometimes I crash while doing so. :V

There is really no difference between a quicksave and a hardsave; they both utilize the engine function. Theoretically if there was a scripting error, the game would crash instantly on a quicksave because the game isn't paused but be silent while in the main menu. But that doesn't make the hardsaving more reliable, it would just cause unknown behavior and possibly further ruin saves or perhaps not even overwrite saves.

I'm not sure why some people have trouble saving as I have never reproduced this issue. I suspect it has something to do with certain Anti-Virus software and the appdata\savedgames folder. This directory should be whitelisted.

1.4.12 texture repack should hopefully reduce the out of memory issues for people using modest graphic settings. Several vehicle textures were reduced in size, many bad settings in the *.thm were fixed meaning textures that weren't properly utilizing mipmaps now should be which will improve GPU performance and reduce cache thrashing, game also looks much better now in my opinion (my game: Imgur.com)

-no_bump_mode1 can be used by people with dinosaur rigs to reduce VRAM usage at the cost of less detail on bump mapping and maybe some other minor visual glitches.
