Hi Macser!
Nice to see ya on moddb. Pls keep this nice looking mod alive, too much disappeared by shutting down so much OFP-related sites!
As for the resolution: At Objects (like vessels, guns etc. ), the fps seems not to suffer so much from high res textures than e. g. the environment like ground-textures for example.
(I know, because I did some high res ground-textures for OFP in former times, as you might know). So in my opinion, keep those 2048 textures definitely as minimum for your nice space-vessels (for the interior too!) etc.to show, what the old OFP-Engine is capable of. I always must think about these rough and blocky textures of the early OFP-vehicle interiors! Anyway, I'm very happy to see your project is still alive, so keep up this good work.

With best regards,
ripley (marcomio)

Hey Marcomio, I remember you from the BI boards. Nice to hear from you. I don't have any issues with 2048 myself. But I've been reliably informed they might take a little longer to load when the game starts. But once that happens, it's business as usual. And I do know 2048 has problems displaying on mac ports.

The project isn't gone. Just stuck in hyperspace for a while. :)

Dude this mod looks awesome! How's the progress? You got a date of when you're gonna release the first version?

Thank you. I don't know, is the short answer. I got caught up in another project over the past few months. So things haven't moved much recently. But it certainly hasn't been dropped.

A question for everybody watching.

Would any of you be genuinely concerned about the use of higher resolution textures? I'm not saying I'll be going crazy with them. But I don't want to make the content unusable for some people. For example, the MAC port apparently can't render 2048x2048 textures.

I haven't found it to make a massive amount of difference, as long as the overall count is kept low. Regardless of resolution.

When I say "higher" res. I mean 1024 or 2048.

Disclaimer: I don't know what your plans and aims are, so I'm commenting mostly from personal experience.

While 1024 resolution doesn't seem outlandish in OFP, I've never saw a 2048 texture which would look so much better than 1024, that it would weight out the lower performance.

In PR Mod Slavko introduced many addons which originaly used 2048 textures, and when used in multiplayer (co-op and CTI) there was a noticeable rise in memory usage, leading to issues like server crash when switching islands (and PR server is no slouch). This also happened from player perspective, and you could experience lower FPS in more intense firefights. Hence Slavko rescaled these high-res textures to smaller sizes.

So, if you really feel the need for 2048 textures, go for it. But as Lenyoga said - it's wise move to also release a 1024 version for those people who wouldn't rescale textures themselves, but would surely whine all over the Internet!

I think the quality would depend on the original texture. If it's well done the extra resolution does make a difference. Not so much in the overall look. But detail, crispness and subtlety. Especially when you're nearby.

I'm trying not to overuse 2048 though. At the moment it's on larger models. Like the At-At/At-St and a couple of the fighters.

For almost everything else it's 1024 and lower. 1024 is essentially the "base" resolution.

I wouldn't say no to higher resolutions - although the current resolution already looks really good and maybe wouldn't even make that much difference in OFP. And there's also my ulterior motives, as you know.
Still, there's always the option to keep the 1024x1024 versions as a separate pack/patch for slower machines.

I look at it the same way. I don't mind going lower for smaller items. But some of the craft need the extra resolution. And even then you do get a little aliasing.

Scaling back is easier anyway. And it's certainly the better looking of the two options.
