Knights of the Old Republic has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the most remarkable RPGs of all time, and its sequel, too. Such a strong foundation provides a great platform for modders, and Omega is an example of a mod telling their own story in the rich Old Republic chronology. This time, you're a sith, following a trail of ancient breadcrumbs - so dig in, and get ready to feel the dark side!
Whilst Half-Life 2 is arguably a little bit easier to mod, it has to be said that the original Half-Life has some of the most creative modifications out there - Base Defense included! Recently celebrating a tenth anniversary, the mod is a whacky, mechanically complex, and visually engaging horde-mode mod that gives you a crazy arsenal and plenty of maps to fight off foes alone, or with a party of kickass friends.
