Description

Romulan and Klingon representatives meet in the Lambda Hydrae system in 2267 to discuss a pivotal shift in the balance of power.

Following the Earth-Romulan War, it was well enough for the fledgling Federation to believe that their Romulan enemies had gone into isolation. The Klingons, on the other hand, had no such luxury. Battles along the Klingon-Romulan border remained commonplace as both empires tested their mettle against the other. For the Romulans, these skirmishes were a convenient way to unify their empire. The Klingons, after all, were old and predictable enemies, ideal adversaries against whom to rally the Romulan people. By the turn of the 23rd Century, however, the frequency of these conflicts dropped as the Romulans consolidated their strength.

When the Romulan Star Empire returned to prominence in 2266, the Federation reeled from the implications. The Klingons were characteristically less concerned. After all, nothing had fundamentally changed - the Romulans had always been enemies, and would always be so, and though the revelation of the Romulans' shared heritage with the Vulcans was interesting, it was ultimately inconsequential. For the High Council and the Imperial Fleet's High Command, what was concerning was the apparent technological leaps the Romulans had made militarily, especially their mastery of cloaking - an ability at the time still considered hypothetical to Klingon engineers. Such an advantage had the potential to shift the next inevitable conflict in the Romulans' favour.

As such it was a great surprise to the High Council when the Romulan Star Empire made contact, 'respectfully' requesting an official dialogue.
