Is that a new visual effect? Been a while since I played the most recent publicly-available AoTF release, but I don't recall seeing anything like that. It's beautiful!

Unfortunately no, it's not a new visual effect for the mod - this is an artist's impression of a supernova. I decided to make this image in recognition of what scientists believe to be the impending real life supernova of the star Betelgeuse.

Betelgeuse, or Alpha Orionis, is one of the brighter stars in the constellation of Orion, and takes the place of his left shoulder. It started noticeably dimming throughout last year, indicating that the star may be about to die.

Meh...Thank god you didn't decide to Photoshop an image of a comet hitting Uranus.

Wouldn't it technically have already died like, hundreds of years ago though and the light is only reaching us now?

Betelgeuse is located 642.5 Light years away from Earth, and therefore any visual change that we can observe would be that old. So yes, whatever is 'happening' to Betelgeuse has in reality long since occurred already.

Indeed. It may have gone nova centuries ago. Then again, it may continue to burn for another hundred thousand years.

When the light from the nova reaches us, however, we'll all know it. It will be very hard to miss in the sky.
