Ages of the Federation is a new total conversion mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. This mod takes place in the Enterprise and Original series eras, focusing on the conflict between the early Federation and Klingon Empire. A resurgent Romulan Star Empire, angry and still licking its wounds after their defeat to Earth and her allies waits in the shadows, ready to take advantage of any of misstep by either the warring powers. The Xindi, new to the galactic stage are also eager to forge their own path.

The USS Enterprise comes under fire in the first encounter between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire in over a century.

In mid-2266 the Constitution-class Federation starship USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain James Kirk, received a distress signal from Neutral Zone Outpost 4, one of several Starfleet installations positioned along the Romulan border. Moving to intercept, the Enterprise found Outposts 2 and 3 not only destroyed, but obliterated - the largest piece of debris left over able to be lifted with a single human hand. Though the location of the attacks made it obvious who was responsible, speculation among the Enterprise's crew ran rampant - no one had seen a Romulan ship in a hundred years, or had any contact with the Star Empire in that time. The Romulans themselves had become figures of mystery, space legends passed down from one generation of Starfleet officers to the next. The potential ramifications of their return were immense.
