Any idea what's causing this?

When I play this, the voxel for one of the armor pickups is swapped with the tesla cannon voxel, so I think I'm picking up a tesla cannon and it's actually an armor pickup. I saw this in the phone booth secret in E1M2.

I think there might be some missing texture for a certain gib. Playing E2M1, after a bunch of guys exploded, one of the gibs left behind was a rainbow-colored pyramid. I'm running the latest version of Combat+.

Just discovered that the cause of all my weird instability problems was using a monitor refresh rate above 60Hz. It seems this screws with all old lithtech games.

Here's a screenshot that shows the bug: I.imgur.com. I confirmed the bug is caused by the mod, because that weird sprite isn't there with DNF Enhanced uninstalled.

EDIT: Here is the sprite in the chute like I described above: I.imgur.com. Also this guy's glasses are bugged: I.imgur.com

A couple of times now, I've seen a 2D sprite of what looks like a bird head appear while playing DNF with this mod. I'm not sure if it means there's a missing model or texture or something. One time I saw it was early in the game where you take the laser turret up to the roof to blow up the mothership. While the turret was going up one of these 2D sprites was floating in the chute.

Thanks very much for this. A great mod. I'm wondering if there's something wrong on my end or a bug in the mod. I noticed that many human character models seem to have missing necks, like their heads are floating. Also weird dark patches can appear on some characters, for instance when Jan and the grandfather are on the machines when they first get abducted, they have dark patches on their armpits. I also killed one of those mutated human slave enemies at one point and after shooting its arm off there was a shadow arm in its place.

Yeah Dege is awesome.

Can you tell me your specific settings for running FEAR in dgVoodoo with your texture mod? Like what video card do you pick from the drop down in the DirectX tab etc.?

I've noticed some problems. Breaking wooden boxes makes no noise, the wood planks hitting the floor are silent. Tree collision is screwed up so you can't get near them which messes up some jumping. Street lamps are floating in the second level. Also the mod is so hard on medium difficulty it's just miserable to play. There's nothing you can do other than play ultra-rapid peekaboo with hitscanner enemies who instantly shred you with undodgeable attacks otherwise, and even the peekaboo strategy doesn't work very well.

Just a heads-up: I wasn't able to get Blood 2 to work with the command line fovx unless I installed the widescreen fix with the .rez file available on pcgamingwiki. It crashes for me every time with the fovx command unless I have that .rez. Not sure if that's because I'm using dgVoodoo instead of the dxwrapper you recommend, but only dgVoodoo renders Blood 2 effects properly. Every other wrapper only makes half the screen red when you take damage, for instance, but dgVoodoo renders it correctly.

Btw the values are supposed to be in quotes too, so it's supposed to be +fovx "105". What does +enableretaillevels 1 do?

UPDATE: Since I wrote this I've gotten a new computer, which also has Windows 10 on it. I can only assume it's due to Windows updates or something similar, but Blood 2 definitely seems more unstable now than before. Frequently there's a Client MFC stopped working error when I close the game. It also seems that with Extra Crispy installed, and even with the high resolution fix exe and dgVoodoo, the game will crash on launch every time if a resolution with a height of 1000 or greater is chosen (so basically don't set a higher res than 1280x960 in dgVoodoo). It also seems that the game crashes sometimes on launch for no clear reason, because it'll then run fine if I try to launch it right after without attempting to do anything different. A good approach to minimize crashing is to make sure you set everything exactly as you want it with Blood 2, in dgVoodoo and so on, before you save the game even once, rather than making changes with the setup after having saved. The game is working with Extra Crispy 6.1, the only problems as yet being the Client MFC error that pops up most times when I shut the game down and sometimes when I launch it. This seems like a minor annoyance so far though. I just hope the game is stable otherwise but without playing completely through it I can't say.

Thanks. Do you think it's possible using dgVoodoo with the Rivarez mod and your mod will reduce the missing textures and crashing problems?

JurgenFlorg - - 37 comments @ FEAR Remastered (Collab)

Thanks for your reply. Just to be clear, these problems are present in the original mods by Rivarez and have been reported by lots of people in the comments pages on his mods--for example, LukasThyWalls and bodo635 here:

Moddb.com

A guy on the GOG forums also commented on the problems created by the Rivarez mod:

"the problem with the HD textures is they make the game and its expansions completely unstable and 99% of the time break the game and expansions"

Gog.com

So the missing textures, crashes, etc. aren't caused by your mod, but by his mod (the problems are present in both the 1.1 and 2.0 versions of his mod, so his updates didn't fix the problems and some say they made the problems worse). I'm using Windows 10 btw, not 11, but it wouldn't surprise me if Windows 10 creates some problems with FEAR anyway.

Will this work with the updated version of FEAR HD textures, which is v2.0.2? HD textures v1.1 is a disaster and crashes every time I have to load a new interval unless texture resolution is set to minimum. This still happened with your mod installed. I have an RTX 4090 so it's not because my system is too weak.

EDIT: Turns out 2.0.2 is also a disaster. With both versions the game either crashes when loading an interval or there are horrible missing texture problems. Not looking like there's any way to make HD textures playable, with or without your improvements.

I'm having a lot of problems with the 1.0 and 1.1 builds. The ability to switch between weapons, especially using the mousewheel, seems to break for no clear reason if certain weapons are selected, such as the upgraded Luger. Reloading the double-barrel shotgun doesn't work sometimes and I don't know why, using the single-barrel shotgun and then the double-barrel seems to fix the problem.

The box of shells pickup works, but the four shotgun shells pickup doesn't. It seems to go to a supply of ammo that cannot be used at all. Once I get enough four shotgun shell pickups, I can't acquire anymore and can't deplete whatever ammo pool they're going to. The box of shells pickups by contrast work normally, I can use them with the double-barrel and single-barrel shotguns.

All these problems happen regardless of whether I use GZDOOM or Zandronum. Btw there are some guns I can't switch to at all once I have certain other guns. For example it's impossible to use the rifle with the scope once the white rifle-like gun is acquired (don't know the names). My guess is that this is intentional because they're supposed to be upgraded weapons but I'm not sure.

There's a bug where simply switching to the MP40 either increases its ammo count or restores it to max ammo.

Good mod. Thanks for your work. But any idea why there is no muzzle flash on the pistol after the first shot in a quick consecutive sequence of shots? There's one flash from the first shot and then nothing for all the rest of the bullets, until I start the shooting again, where again there's one muzzle flash then nothing.

What are the maps and enemy packs you're using with the mod in the video and screenshots? They look like they fit it nicely so it would be nice to play the mod with them.

Not sure how feasible this is but have you considered implementing improvements that some other mods offer, such as sprite and texture upscaling and corrections to the heretic sprites so they include the right guns (as in the "Cultists with correct guns addon")?

I thought I should post my own installation guide for getting this to work on Windows 10 (64 bit in my case), since there's a bug I've run into on two separate Windows 10 machines that took a bit of screwing around to figure out. This guide will only be for the GOG version, since I've never used any other version of Blood 2.

1. Install Blood 2 using the old fashioned individual GOG game installer, DON’T install through GOG Galaxy.

2. Go to your control panel and go to Programs, then Programs and Features. Uninstall the entry with the name "GOG.com Blood 2." This is a compatibility mode GOG forces that screws up the game and prevents it from launching, so just get rid of it.

3. Download the "Blood II - high resolution fix" from the PCGamingWiki website Blood 2 page. Extract the Client.exe from the archive and replace the Client.exe in your Blood 2 installation folder with it.

4. Download dgvoodoo2 (I tested with the latest version as of this post, which is v 2.78, and it seems to work fine). Extract the files, and move the "dgVoodooCpl.exe" file and "dgVoodoo.conf" file to your Blood 2 installation folder. Go back to the extracted dgvoodoo2 archive. Open the "MS" folder, and then the "x86" folder. Move the files "D3DImm.dll" and "ddraw.dll" from that "x86" folder into your Blood 2 installation folder.

5. Run the "dgVoodooCpl.exe" file in your Blood 2 installation folder, and under the DirectX tab, set whatever you want. You probably want to uncheck “dgVooDoo Watermark” and “Disable Alt-Enter.” You can set your desired resolution and anti-aliasing under the DirectX tab. I prefer to only use 4:3 resolutions and avoid all the widescreen fix stuff as it only seems to create more trouble. DO NOT BOTHER with the resolution setting in the Blood 2 launcher, ignore it completely and only set the resolution through dgVoodoo2.

6. Run Blood 2. Choose Caleb. At some point in the first level, CREATE A SAVE (I’ll explain later why this is important). Close Blood 2.

7. Download the Blood 2 Extra Crispy 6.1 mod. Follow the installation instructions.

8. Run Blood 2 with Extra Crispy 6.1. Make sure you NEVER load the save you created in unmodded Blood 2 while running Extra Crispy. You should now be good to go.

Without step 6, and instead going straight to step 7, Blood 2 would crash every single time I attempted to save the game, on two different machines. Only after I went through the whole installation process with step 6 added did it work.
