Mod review

What can I say about this?? All that really comes to mind is how blown away I am. This honestly might be one of the best Amnesia TDD mods of all time, which is hefty praise considering that I've played close to 150 of them over the years.

First of all, the story is simply fantastic. Well written, creative, voice acted notes and has some creepy af lore. Just reading some of the notes was enough to send shivers down my spine. Excellent stuff, easily one of the best story lines I've seen in any of these mods. Its got quite a nice length to it as well, clocking it at about 5 hours for me, but didn't drag on or suffer from pointless padding.

In terms of atmosphere it doesn't get much get much better than this. This developer managed to keep me on the edge of my seat from the time i hit "new game" till the credits rolled. The amazing custom soundtrack and almost perfect pacing and level design combine to make this one of the most immersive and fear inducing Amnesia mods I've ever played. Scary moments are crafted through good game design and mechanics instead of cheap jumpscares, which is refreshing change from a lot of these mods. Monster encounters were unpredictable for the most part which is a good thing,(they become a bit more frequent and predictable in the second half, but not to the point where it felt like monster spam)and the new monsters are a refreshing change while fitting nicely with the plot. I also liked the idea of removing tinderboxes, laudanum and sanity potions. I simply felt it allowed the mod to feel more focused, not making me feel like I always had to check every nook and cranny for resources.

Puzzle design was another thing done very well here. None of the puzzles felt like filler and they were all very creative, yet fair and intuitive. I (someone who is not good at puzzles) only got somewhat stuck once (piano puzzle) but never felt frustrated. In fact some of them were simply fun to solve and work through, which again, is something few mods are able to pull off. I also encountered no significant bugs or glitches, which is another plus.

Summary:

Pros:
+ Amazing story, one of the best I've seen in one of these mods

+ Incredible atmosphere and plenty of scary moments

+ New monsters are well implemented and used sparingly

+ Visuals and audio are both 11/10

+ Creative and interesting puzzles

+ No significant bugs or glitches

Cons:
- Monster encounters get a bit predictable in the second half and the enemies are pretty easy to avoid in most of them.

Overall:10/10. Masterpiece, one of the best Amnesia mods I've ever seen and one that deserves more recognition than this near dead community can give it. So spread the word. Play this mod yourself and then tell your friends, talk about it on social media, anything to get the word out there that this amazing game exists and get people to play it!!

Cry of Fear

Game review

Best mod I've ever played and the scariest horror game overall(and I've played quite a few of them). This free mod is better than almost anything else in the horror genre.

Only thing preventing it from it being a full 10/10 is that many of the mechanics, the jumping sections in particular, were quirky and occasionally got quite frustrating.

Regardless, this is a must play for any fan of horror.

Mod review

A great addition. Short, but gameplay was excellent. I'm happy that the Penumbra series finally got the ending it deserved.

Amnesia: Extraction Point (V2 RELEASED)

Mod review may contain spoilers

Yet another very good mod from this creator. It's got tons of unique elements including custom music and objects, several new monsters and innovative scripting and puzzle designs. It's also got some genuinely scary moments and a unique plot.

It does have a few problems however. The main one for me was the voice acting. Using computer generated voices may save time, but it does not come out well, and almost every time I heard someone speak, it completely broke my immersion. Also, the ending was very abrupt and the story had a few elements that I didn't feel were explained all that well (example: Why does this virus turn people into zombies?).

Pros:

- Tons of custom, and unique stuff including, new music, objects, puzzles, monsters and some great scripted sequences

- Creepy atmosphere, and several good scares

- Decent length (about 2 hours for me)

- Interactions with other characters, as well as a very character driven plot.

- Since Final Revelations is one of my favorite Amnesia custom stories of all time, there was one part that got me pretty nostalgic...

- Powerups were a nice addition

Cons:

- Poor quality voice acting that broke my immersion several times. (This surprised me because the voice acting in Final Revelations was pretty good)

- Didn't like the ending, and I felt some parts of the plot were a little loose

- A few bugs. One in particular made me have to reload a previous save (one of the buttons I needed for the doctor's keypad wouldn't work)

- Almost no oil given at all. If you miss the "oil regeneration" powerup, you're pretty much gonna be going through the rest of the game in the dark.

Final Verdict: No, this mod is not as good as Final Revelations, but that certainly does not imply that it's bad. Sure, there are a few areas that I felt could be improved, but overall it's still an enjoyable mod that is worthy of your time if you're looking for something new to play. If for nothing else than all of it's unique features, this cs still manages to stand out from the crowd and is an enjoyable experience overall which is why I give this mod a solid 8/10.

I should start off by saying that, for a first time modder, this was amazing, far better then most who attempt this the first time. The story is very well done, despite a few grammatical error in the notes, and it kept me engaged all the way through. There were tons of interesting notes and flashbacks which made the story feel rich and unique. It also has multiple (6 I believe) endings, as well as one major twist that caught me totally off guard. There's also a custom soundtrack that features some of the best monster music I've ever heard in an Amnesia cs. My only major complaint is that I had a hard time getting this to work initially, and on top of that, suffered a game breaking bug at one point and had to restart.

Here's the overall summary of my thoughts:

Positives:

- engaging, detailed, and well written story with many endings and excellent voice acting

- good custom soundtrack with amazing monster music

-monsters are scary again. Both because of the music, and the fact that this mod doesn't allow you to simply throw yourself into a closet and wait for 30 seconds. You'll need to be a bit more creative if you wish to survive. This mod also features a new monster as well.

- Solid level design for the most part, including an amazing final map.

- Puzzles were well designed. Challenging, but not so much that they broke the pacing

Negatives:

- Bugs, including a game breaking one that I experienced.

- You can skip some parts. On my first playthrough, before having to restart, I was able to get up to the attic were the dungeon key is by stacking boxes, thereby skipping like 30 minutes of gameplay.

- Other than monsters, there aren't really any other scare tactics used and it gets a little dull near the end.

Overall, I'd have to say I'm more than impressed with this mod, and it's easily the best one that's come out in a long time. Add a little more variety to the scares and polish up some of the technical aspects, and I have no doubt your next mod could easily be worthy of a 9 or even 10. Very much looking forward to your next project.

Alma Remastered

Mod review

Solid mod all around. It doesn't really give anything new or incredibly spectacular, but it has a little bit of everything and is worth your time if you've got an hour or so to kill.

To see how far you've come since episode 1 is incredible. Almost everything about this mod was absolutely amazing. From the level design, to the great scripting, the scares, the atmosphere... oh yeah the atmosphere. This mod is one of the scariest I've ever played. There wasn't a single session of this that I played that didn't end up with me sweating profusely because of how tense it was. The scares were perfectly placed, executed, not overused, and unique too, no flying naked guys. This mod also has some of the most unique, and interesting gameplay I've ever seen in Amnesia. The scripting is phenomenal, with at least a handful of simply unforgettable sequences. Almost all of the music and sound is custom, there are countless custom textures, objects and a new monster. Despite a 6+ hour long story, it never got repetitive, each of the 90+ maps offers something new. My only major complaint was that story didn't remain on par with the gameplay, and in my opinion, it really fell off between chapter 6 and the end of chapter 7. Usually games tend to make a story longer than the gameplay can keep it interesting for (that made sense right?) but in this case it was the opposite.

Now that I got my major thoughts out of the way, here's the full breakdown of each element of this mod;

Good:
+ Fantastic use, and variety of custom assets
+ Amazing scripted sequences, feels like it was made by a professional
+ Long, but never repetitive gameplay
+ Amazing level desgin
+ Choices can be made that effect ending
+ Among the very best at building tension
+ Jumpscares are very well scripted and placed, not cheap at all

Bad:
- Story wasn't the most original to begin with, and top of that, it was dragged out much longer than it needed to be,
- Voice acting was mediocre at best, and the grammar in notes was god-awful
- Puzzles were unique, but there was a lack of direction and guidance which led to some frustration, especially near the end

Verdict: Flawed, but as far as mods go, it's an amazing ride that deserves the attention of every Amnesia fan
