I'm a solo game developer inspired by 90's console games and horror related media. My main focus is on game design and programming. My artistic skills are lacking but I usually get the job done. The types of games I design and enjoy are classic platformers, RPG's, FPS's and horror games.

Amateur awkward design leads to cheap deaths and frustration. It's basically enemy spam and everything sped up by 100%. I'll give it props for being one of the earliest RE2 mods but there's no denying it's poor quality.

Resident Evil 2 - Marvin's Mod

Mod review

It's a short little campaign but it's presentation is above average. The CG cutscenes and voice acting are very impressive for a mod. As for the gameplay, it's pretty much vanilla RE2 just with a different progression. A little on the easy side for Normal difficulty but not any more so than the base game.

My only major complaint is that the progression involves a ton of backtracking and rooms refilling with enemies multiple times. Also there were one or two sneak attacks as well (enemy placed just out of view in a room you previously cleared, only for you to run into it and receive damage.)

Overall it's a quality mod that's just a bit too short and has a few design flaws that hold it back from being great. Well worth checking out though.

Resident Evil - Barry's Mod

Pretty solid mod here. Changes are minimal but just enough of a remix to make it an enjoyable experience. I found it a little on the easy side but was fun none the less.

Resident Evil: Mortal Night

Mod review

I have very mixed feelings about this mod. On one hand, it's a massive achievement in modding. There are tons of interesting and unusual mechanics in this mod that you won't see in the vanilla game and it makes you wonder "how did they do this?" But on the other hand, the general game design here is pretty bad.

It throws all of the genius design principles of RE1/2/3 out the window and replaces those principles with "u gona die lol" as it's foundation. The "normal" mode of the game is ridiculously hard, even for a veteran of the series who has completed knife only runs of nearly every game multiple times. This mode is completable but it isn't enjoyable for a first playthrough and therefore acts more like a super-hard mode than anything else.

The "easy" mode is what normal mode should be, as it's still fairly tough for a first playthrough. And the actual "hard" mode? Forget about it.

Difficulty aside, the level design, or should I say enemy/item placement and progression isn't well designed either. Backtracking is the name of the game, with intentionally designed routes that force you to go back and forth through the same areas again and again, this is most egregious in episodes 2 and 3, where they force you to have to reencounter the same infinitely respawning enemies over and over again.

This kind of design is almost anti-survival in it's mechanics, as it punishes you for trying to clear out certain halls to make repeated travel safer. It's almost a game of luck, just hoping the RNG is on your side so that you can avoid taking damage every time you go through a room. The randomized enemy placement in Episode 1, while a very interesting concept, also screws with the "balance" of the game since it impedes the player's ability to memorize a layout and plan ahead.

Anyway, I don't want this review to drag on so I will conclude with saying this:

Episode 1 is pretty fun on the "easy" mode and well worth the playthrough. Episode 2 and 3 are significantly lower in quality and enjoyment. I thought the super-zombies of Episode 1 were pretty goofy but I didn't find them to be too much of a bother. But the invisible enemies and immortal enemies of episode 2 and 3 are just plain out stupid ideas that ruin the gameplay.

Also there's a "puzzle" at the end of episode 3 that I couldn't figure out, even after an hour or trying. The "clue" or better yet - instructions don't exactly give you a clear enough indication to what it wants you to do. And experimentation got me nowhere.

One final comment: the episodic nature of the game seems completely unnecessary (though i'm willing to bet there is a technical reason for it) as this removes all items acquired in previous episodes, another massive flaw in design for a survival game. It also removes any of the story decisions you made in the previous episodes, so nothing really adds up in the end. Ideally it'd be great if all 3 episodes could be combined and polished up some more, but I doubt that'll happen as i'm sure the author of the mod intended for everything to be the way it is and isn't interested in changing it. Which I respect.

Wulfen Texture Pack

Mod review

great quality textures, the only downfall is that it is still very incomplete and creates an inconsistent visual experience.

Doom III

Game review

plays more like Doom64, and less like Doom 1&2. Overall a well polished FPS but the darkness of the game is a major problem for me. This game is almost unplayable because of how dark it is, even with gamma cranked all the way up. If it weren't for sikkmod i wouldn't have been able to get through it.

Half-Life

Game review

I despised the enemy design and AI in this game. The combat was only difficult because of how weak and inaccurate your weapons are. The worst part however was the platforming. I HATE first person platforming, and they didn't try to smooth it out either. It's rough as hell, getting caught or flying off ladders and jumping on hanging objects or moving objects you'll have problems sticking on the damn thing.

Slender: The Eight Pages

Game review

Found it boring and slow paced with low detail in the environment. I have played mods better than this. The gameplay is directionless and plotless. Also a bit irritating as I was taken to the titlescreen with no explanation as to why after walking around in the woods very slowly for about 15 minutes.
